³⁹ And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

³⁹ These were all commended^(A) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,^(B)

⁸ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”^(B)

⁹ And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe^[b] your own traditions!^{(C) 10} For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’^[c](D) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’^{[d](E) 11} But you say^(F) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— ¹² then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. ¹³ Thus you nullify the word of God^(G) by your tradition^(H) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

¹⁶ This is what the Lord says:

¹¹ And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.^(A) So then, he is the father^(B) of all who believe^(C) but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. ¹² And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for^(A) and assurance about what we do not see.^{(B) 2} This is what the ancients were commended for.^(C)
