Luke 4:8-18

⁸And Jesus answered him, ^(A)“It is written,

^(B)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and ^(C)him only shall you serve.’”

⁹^(D)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are ^(E)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰for it is written,

^(F)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’

¹¹and

^(G)“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

¹²And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ^(H)‘You shall not ^(I)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ¹³And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him ^(J)until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹⁴^(K)And Jesus returned ^(L)in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and ^(M)a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. ¹⁵And ^(N)he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

¹⁶^(O)And he came to ^(P)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And ^(Q)as was his custom, ^(R)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up ^(S)to read. ¹⁷And ^(T)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

¹⁸^(U)“The Spirit of the Lord ^(V)is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to ^(W)proclaim good news to the poor.
^(X)He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
    and ^(Y)recovering of sight to the blind,
    ^(Z)to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
