43 but he said to them, (A)“I must (B)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching (C)in the synagogues of Judea.[a]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by (D)the lake of Gennesaret, (E)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were (F)washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And (G)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, (H)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, (I)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (J)they enclosed a large number of fish, and (K)their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (L)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, (M)“Depart from me, for (N)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”[b] 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, (O)they left everything and followed him.

Him Whom They Have Pierced

10 “And (A)I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and (B)pleas for mercy, so that, (C)when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, (D)they shall mourn for him, (E)as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 (F)On that day (G)the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great (H)as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, (I)each family[a] by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of (J)Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of (K)the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.

13 (L)“On that day there shall be (M)a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

Idolatry Cut Off

“And (N)on that day, declares the Lord of hosts, (O)I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that (P)they shall be remembered no more. And also (Q)I will remove from the land the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness. And if anyone again prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, (R)‘You shall not live, for you speak lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who bore him shall pierce him through when he prophesies.

“On that day (S)every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies. He will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive, but he will say, (T)‘I am no prophet, I am a worker of the soil, for a man sold me in my youth.’[b] And if one asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your back?’[c] he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends.’

The Shepherd Struck

“Awake, O sword, against (U)my shepherd,
    against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.

(V)“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
    I will turn my hand against the little ones.
In the whole land, declares the Lord,
    two thirds shall be cut off and perish,
    (W)and one third shall be left alive.
And (X)I will put this third into the fire,
    and refine them as one refines silver,
    and test them as gold is tested.
(Y)They will call upon my name,
    and (Z)I will answer them.
(AA)I will say, ‘They are my people’;
    and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

The Coming Day of the Lord

14 Behold, (AB)a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. For (AC)I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and (AD)the city shall be taken (AE)and the houses plundered (AF)and the women raped. (AG)Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (AH)Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. (AI)On that day his feet shall stand (AJ)on (AK)the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and (AL)the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by (AM)a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from (AN)the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.[d]

(AO)On that day (AP)there shall be (AQ)no light, cold, or frost.[e] (AR)And there shall be a unique[f] day, (AS)which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but (AT)at evening time there shall be light.

(AU)On that day (AV)living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to (AW)the eastern sea[g] and half of them to (AX)the western sea.[h] (AY)It shall continue in summer as in winter.

And (AZ)the Lord will be king over all the earth. (BA)On that day the Lord will be (BB)one and (BC)his name one.

10 (BD)The whole land shall be turned into a plain from (BE)Geba to (BF)Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But (BG)Jerusalem shall remain aloft (BH)on its site from (BI)the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to (BJ)the Corner Gate, and from (BK)the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses. 11 And it shall be inhabited, for (BL)there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction.[i] (BM)Jerusalem shall dwell in security.
