⁴ But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’^[a]”

³ Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

⁴ But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,

¹⁷ Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

³¹ “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’

²⁵ “You must serve only the Lord your God. If you do, I^[a] will bless you with food and water, and I will protect you from illness.

¹⁰ For the Scriptures say,

²⁵ “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? ²⁶ Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

³⁴ Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures^[a] that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’^{[b] 35} And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’
