²¹ Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

¹⁸ In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah^[a] would suffer.^(A)

²⁵ The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.”^{(A) 26} Jesus said to her, “I am he,^[a] the one who is speaking to you.”^(B)

¹⁴ With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says:

²⁹ “Fellow Israelites,^[a] I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.^{(A) 30} Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne.^{(B) 31} Foreseeing this, David^[b] spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah,^[c] saying,

³² “This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.^{(D) 33} Being therefore exalted at^[d] the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you see and hear.^(E)

¹⁶ No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

²³ Then turning to the disciples, Jesus^[a] said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!^{(A) 24} For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”^(B)

³⁹ “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is they that testify on my behalf.^(A)
