Juan el Bautista prepara el camino(A)(B)
3 En el año quince del reinado de Tiberio César, Poncio Pilato gobernaba la provincia de Judea, Herodes[a] era tetrarca en Galilea, su hermano Felipe en Iturea y Traconite, y Lisanias en Abilene; 2 el sumo sacerdocio lo ejercían Anás y Caifás. En aquel entonces, la palabra de Dios llegó a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto. 3 Juan recorría toda la región del Jordán predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados. 4 Así está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías:
«Voz de uno que grita en el desierto:
“Preparen el camino para el Señor,
háganle sendas derechas.
5 Se levantarán todos los valles
y se allanarán todas las montañas y colinas.
Los caminos torcidos se enderezarán
y las sendas escabrosas queden llanas.
6 Y toda humanidad verá la salvación de Dios”».[b]
7 Muchos acudían a Juan para que los bautizara.
—¡Camada de víboras! —dijo—. ¿Quién les advirtió que huyeran del castigo que se acerca? 8 Produzcan frutos que demuestren arrepentimiento. Y no se pongan a decir: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre”. Porque les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios es capaz de darle hijos a Abraham. 9 Es más, el hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles y todo árbol que no produzca buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
10 —¿Entonces qué debemos hacer? —preguntaba la gente.
11 —El que tiene dos camisas debe compartir con el que no tiene ninguna —contestó Juan—, y el que tiene comida debe hacer lo mismo.
12 Llegaron también unos recaudadores de impuestos para que los bautizara.
—Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros? —preguntaron.
13 —No cobren más de lo debido —respondió.
14 —Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer? —preguntaron unos soldados.
Y les dijo:
—No extorsionen a nadie ni hagan denuncias falsas; más bien confórmense con lo que les pagan.
15 La gente estaba a la expectativa y todos se preguntaban si acaso Juan sería el Cristo.
16 —Yo los bautizo a ustedes con[c] agua —respondió Juan a todos—. Pero está por llegar uno más poderoso que yo, a quien ni siquiera merezco desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. 17 Tiene el aventador en la mano para limpiar su era y recoger el trigo en su granero. La paja, en cambio, la quemará con fuego que nunca se apagará.
18 Y con muchas otras palabras exhortaba Juan a la gente y le anunciaba las buenas noticias. 19 Pero, cuando reprendió al tetrarca Herodes por el asunto de su cuñada Herodías,[d] y por todas las otras maldades que había cometido, 20 Herodes llegó hasta el colmo de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.

21 Un día en que todos acudían a Juan para que los bautizara, Jesús fue bautizado también. Y mientras oraba, se abrió el cielo 22 y el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre él en forma de paloma. Entonces se oyó una voz que desde el cielo decía: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido contigo».
23 Jesús tenía unos treinta años cuando comenzó su ministerio. Era hijo, según se creía, de José. Esta es la lista de sus antepasados:

3 Era el año quince del gobierno del emperador Tiberio, y Poncio Pilato era gobernador de Judea. Herodes gobernaba en Galilea, su hermano Filipo gobernaba en Iturea y Traconítide, y Lisanias gobernaba en Abilene. 2 Anás y Caifás eran los sumos sacerdotes. Por aquel tiempo, Dios habló en el desierto a Juan, el hijo de Zacarías, 3 y Juan pasó por todos los lugares junto al río Jordán, diciendo a la gente que ellos debían volverse a Dios y ser bautizados, para que Dios les perdonara sus pecados. 4 Esto sucedió como está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías:
«Una voz grita en el desierto:
“Preparen el camino del Señor;
ábranle un camino recto.
5 Todo valle será rellenado,
todo cerro y colina será nivelado,
los caminos torcidos serán enderezados,
y allanados los caminos disparejos.
6 Todo el mundo verá la salvación que Dios envía.”»
7 Cuando la gente salía para que Juan los bautizara, él les decía: «¡Raza de víboras! ¿Quién les ha dicho a ustedes que van a librarse del terrible castigo que se acerca? 8 Pórtense de tal modo que se vea claramente que se han vuelto al Señor, y no vayan a decir entre ustedes: “¡Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham!”; porque les aseguro que incluso a estas piedras Dios puede convertirlas en descendientes de Abraham. 9 Además, el hacha ya está lista para cortar los árboles de raíz. Todo árbol que no da buen fruto, se corta y se echa al fuego.»
10 Entonces la gente le preguntó:
—¿Qué debemos hacer?
11 Juan les contestó:
—El que tenga dos trajes, dele uno al que no tiene ninguno; y el que tenga comida, compártala con el que no la tiene.
12 Se acercaron también para ser bautizados algunos de los que cobraban impuestos para Roma, y le preguntaron a Juan:
—Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?
13 Juan les dijo:
—No cobren más de lo que deben cobrar.
14 También algunos soldados le preguntaron:
—Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?
Les contestó:
—No le quiten nada a nadie, ni con amenazas ni acusándolo de algo que no haya hecho; y confórmense con su sueldo.
15 La gente estaba en gran expectativa, y se preguntaba si tal vez Juan sería el Mesías; 16 pero Juan les dijo a todos: «Yo, en verdad, los bautizo con agua; pero viene uno que los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. Él es más poderoso que yo, que ni siquiera merezco desatarle la correa de sus sandalias. 17 Trae su aventador en la mano, para limpiar el trigo y separarlo de la paja. Guardará el trigo en su granero, pero quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.»
18 De este modo, y con otros muchos consejos, Juan anunciaba la buena noticia a la gente. 19 Además reprendió a Herodes, el gobernante, porque tenía por mujer a Herodías, la esposa de su hermano, y también por todo lo malo que había hecho; 20 pero Herodes, a todas sus malas acciones añadió otra: metió a Juan en la cárcel.

21 Sucedió que cuando Juan los estaba bautizando a todos, también Jesús fue bautizado; y mientras oraba, el cielo se abrió 22 y el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre él en forma visible, como una paloma, y se oyó una voz del cielo, que decía:
—Tú eres mi Hijo amado, a quien he elegido.

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
