The Proclamation of John the Baptist
3Â In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler[a] of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler[b] of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler[c] of Abilene, 2Â during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3Â He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4Â as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
âThe voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
âPrepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.
5Â Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth;
6Â and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.ââ
7Â John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, âYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Â Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, âWe have Abraham as our ancestorâ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9Â Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.â
10Â And the crowds asked him, âWhat then should we do?â 11Â In reply he said to them, âWhoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.â 12Â Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, âTeacher, what should we do?â 13Â He said to them, âCollect no more than the amount prescribed for you.â 14Â Soldiers also asked him, âAnd we, what should we do?â He said to them, âDo not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.â
15Â As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,[d] 16Â John answered all of them by saying, âI baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with[e] the Holy Spirit and fire. 17Â His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.â
18Â So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. 19Â But Herod the ruler,[f] who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brotherâs wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, 20Â added to them all by shutting up John in prison.
The Baptism of Jesus
21Â Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22Â and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, âYou are my Son, the Beloved;[g] with you I am well pleased.â[h]

John the Baptistâs message
3Â In the fifteenth year of the rule of the emperor Tiberiusâwhen Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea and Herod was ruler[a] over Galilee, his brother Philip was ruler[b] over Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was ruler[c] over Abilene, 2Â during the high priesthood of Annas and CaiaphasâGodâs word came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3Â John went throughout the region of the Jordan River, calling for people to be baptized to show that they were changing their hearts and lives and wanted God to forgive their sins. 4Â This is just as it was written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
A voice crying out in the wilderness:
âPrepare the way for the Lord;
make his paths straight.
5Â Every valley will be filled,
and every mountain and hill will be leveled.
The crooked will be made straight
and the rough places made smooth.
6Â All humanity will see Godâs salvation.â[d]
7Â Then John said to the crowds who came to be baptized by him, âYou children of snakes! Who warned you to escape from the angry judgment that is coming soon? 8Â Produce fruit that shows you have changed your hearts and lives. And donât even think about saying to yourselves, Abraham is our father. I tell you that God is able to raise up Abrahamâs children from these stones. 9Â The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesnât produce good fruit will be chopped down and tossed into the fire.â
10Â The crowds asked him, âWhat then should we do?â
11Â He answered, âWhoever has two shirts must share with the one who has none, and whoever has food must do the same.â
12Â Even tax collectors came to be baptized. They said to him, âTeacher, what should we do?â
13Â He replied, âCollect no more than you are authorized to collect.â
14Â Soldiers asked, âWhat about us? What should we do?â
He answered, âDonât cheat or harass anyone, and be satisfied with your pay.â
Responses to John
15Â The people were filled with expectation, and everyone wondered whether John might be the Christ. 16Â John replied to them all, âI baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than me is coming. Iâm not worthy to loosen the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17Â The shovel he uses to sift the wheat from the husks is in his hands. He will clean out his threshing area and bring the wheat into his barn. But he will burn the husks with a fire that canât be put out.â 18Â With many other words John appealed to them, proclaiming good news to the people.
19Â But Herod the ruler had been criticized harshly by John because of Herodias, Herodâs brotherâs wife, and because of all the evil he had done. 20Â He added this to the list of his evil deeds: he locked John up in prison.
Jesusâ baptism
21Â When everyone was being baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened 22Â and the Holy Spirit came down on him in bodily form like a dove. And there was a voice from heaven: âYou are my Son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness.â
Jesusâ genealogy

People supposed that he was the son of Joseph son of Heli 24Â son of Matthat son of Levi son of Melchi son of Jannai son of Joseph 25Â son of Mattathias son of Amos son of Nahum son of Esli son of Naggai 26Â son of Maath son of Mattathias son of Semein son of Josech son of Joda 27Â son of Joanan son of Rhesa son of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel son of Neri 28Â son of Melchi son of Addi son of Cosam son of Elmadam son of Er 29Â son of Joshua son of Eliezer son of Jorim son of Matthat son of Levi 30Â son of Simeon son of Judah son of Joseph son of Jonam son of Eliakim 31Â son of Melea son of Menna son of Mattatha son of Nathan son of David 32Â son of Jesse son of Obed son of Boaz son of Sala son of Nahshon 33Â son of Amminadab son of Admin son of Arni son of Hezron son of Perez son of Judah 34Â son of Jacob son of Isaac son of Abraham son of Terah son of Nahor 35Â son of Serug son of Reu son of Peleg son of Eber son of Shelah 36Â son of Cainan son of Arphaxad son of Shem son of Noah son of Lamech 37Â son of Methuselah son of Enoch son of Jared son of Mahalalel son of Cainan 38Â son of Enos son of Seth son of Adam son of God.
