⁹ Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(A)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

⁹ Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

⁷ And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. ^(A)Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’

¹⁴ He ^(A)proclaimed aloud and said thus: ^(B)‘Chop down the tree and ^(C)lop off its branches, ^(D)strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. ^(E)Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches.
