3 [a]He went throughout [the] whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,(A) 4 [b]as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah:(B)
“A voice of one crying out in the desert:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,(C)
make straight his paths.
5 Every valley shall be filled
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The winding roads shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth,

3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(A) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
