[a]He went throughout [the] whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,(A) [b]as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah:(B)

“A voice of one crying out in the desert:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,(C)
    make straight his paths.
Every valley shall be filled
    and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The winding roads shall be made straight,
    and the rough ways made smooth,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”(D)

He said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(E) Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance; and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.(F) Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(G)

10 And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” 11 He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two tunics should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”(H) 13 He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?” He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.”

15 (I)Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.

He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” 11 In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

So John went throughout the whole territory of the Jordan River, preaching, “Turn away from your sins and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins.” (A)As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah:

“Someone is shouting in the desert:
    ‘Get the road ready for the Lord;
    make a straight path for him to travel!
Every valley must be filled up,
    every hill and mountain leveled off.
The winding roads must be made straight,
    and the rough paths made smooth.
The whole human race will see God's salvation!’”

(B)Crowds of people came out to John to be baptized by him. “You snakes!” he said to them. “Who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send? (C)Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. And don't start saying among yourselves that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham! (D)The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire.”

10 The people asked him, “What are we to do, then?”

11 He answered, “Whoever has two shirts must give one to the man who has none, and whoever has food must share it.”

12 (E)Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what are we to do?”

13 “Don't collect more than is legal,” he told them.

14 Some soldiers also asked him, “What about us? What are we to do?”

He said to them, “Don't take money from anyone by force or accuse anyone falsely. Be content with your pay.”

15 People's hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah.

And he came into all (A)the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance [a]for the forgiveness of sins; as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

(B)The voice of one calling [b]out in the wilderness,
Prepare the way of the Lord,
Make His paths straight!
(C)Every ravine will be filled,
And every mountain and hill will be lowered;
The crooked will become straight,
And the rough roads smooth;
(D)And all [c]flesh will (E)see the salvation of God!’”

So he was saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “(F)You [d]offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore produce fruits that are consistent with repentance, and (G)do not start saying [e]to yourselves, ‘(H)We have Abraham as our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children for Abraham. But indeed the axe is already being laid at the root of the trees; so (I)every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “(J)Then what are we to do?” 11 And he would answer and say to them, “The one who has two [f]tunics is to (K)share with the one who has none; and the one who has food is to do likewise.” 12 Now even (L)tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what are we to do?” 13 And he said to them, “[g]Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.” 14 And soldiers also were questioning him, saying, “What are we to do, we as well?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, nor [h](M)harass anyone, and (N)be content with your wages.”

15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and they all were thinking carefully in their hearts about John, (O)whether he himself perhaps was the [i]Christ,

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(C) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(D) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(E) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 “What should we do then?”(G) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(H)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(I) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(J) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(K)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(L) might possibly be the Messiah.(M)
