The Baptism of Jesus

²¹ Now when all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened,^(A)

³² And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.^{(A) 33} I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’^{(B) 34} And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Chosen One.”^[a]

¹³ Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.^{(A) 14} John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” ¹⁵ But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. ¹⁶ And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him.^{(B) 17} And a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Son, the Beloved,^[a] with whom I am well pleased.”^(C)

Jesus Speaks about His Death

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say: ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.^{(A) 28} Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”^(B)

⁹ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.^{(A) 10} And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him.^{(B) 11} And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my Son, the Beloved;^[a] with you I am well pleased.”^(C)

²⁸ Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus^[a] took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.^{(A) 29} And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

¹⁸ Once when Jesus^[a] was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”^(A)

¹⁶ Meanwhile, he would slip away to deserted places and pray.^(A)

²³ And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,^(A)
