John the Baptist Prepares the Way^(A)(B)

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate^(C) was governor of Judea, Herod^(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—

¹⁷ For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.^(A) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. ¹⁸ For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”^(B)

³ Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison^(A) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,^{(B) 4} for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”^(C)

² When John,^(A) who was in prison,^(B) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples
