In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And (A)an angel of the [a]Lord (B)stood before them, and the glory of the [b]Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “(C)Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people. 11 For today in the city of David there has been born for you a (D)Savior, who is [c](E)Christ (F)the Lord. 12 (G)And this will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a [d]manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 (H)Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men [e](I)with whom He is pleased.”

15 And it happened that when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they went in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the [f]manger. 17 And when they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it marveled at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary (J)was treasuring all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds went back, (K)glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as was told them.

The Shepherds and the Angels

Now in that same region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:(A) 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[a] the Lord.(B) 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”(C) 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,[b] praising God and saying,(D)

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”[c](E)

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them, 19 and Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.(F) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.(G)
