The Emmaus Disciples

13 Now(A) that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles[a](B) from Jerusalem.(C) 14 Together they were discussing everything that had taken place. 15 And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk along with them. 16 But they[b] were prevented from recognizing him.(D) 17 Then he asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having[c] with each other as you are walking?” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

18 The one named Cleopas answered him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days?” (E)

19 “What things?” he asked them.

So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth,(F) who was a prophet(G) powerful in action and speech(H) before God and all the people,(I) 20 and how our chief priests and leaders(J) handed him over to be sentenced to death,(K) and they crucified him.(L) 21 But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem(M) Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day(N) since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, 23 and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”(O)

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow[d] to believe all that the prophets have spoken!(P) 26 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer(Q) these things and enter into his glory?”(R) 27 Then beginning with Moses(S) and all the Prophets,(T) he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.(U)

28 They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther.(V) 29 But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke(W) it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened,(X) and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.(Y) 32 They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures(Z) to us?”

16 Paul stood up and motioned with his hand and said, “Fellow Israelites, and you who fear God, listen!(A) 17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors, made the people prosper during their stay in the land of Egypt, and led them out of it with a mighty[a] arm.(B) 18 And for about forty years he put up with them[b] in the wilderness;(C) 19 and after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan,(D) he gave them their land as an inheritance. 20 This all took about 450 years. After this, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.(E) 21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.(F) 22 After removing him,(G) he raised up David as their king and testified about him, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart,[c](H) who will carry out all my will.’

23 “From this man’s descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel(I) the Savior, Jesus.[d] 24 Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.(J) 25 Now as John was completing his mission, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’(K)

26 “Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.(L) 27 Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.(M) 28 Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.(N) 29 When they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and put him in a tomb.(O) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(P) 31 and he appeared for many days to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.(Q) 32 And we ourselves proclaim to you the good news of the promise that was made to our ancestors.(R) 33 God has fulfilled this for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second Psalm:

You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.[e][f] (S)

34 As to his raising him from the dead, never to return to decay, he has spoken in this way, I will give you the holy and sure promises of David.[g](T) 35 Therefore he also says in another passage, You will not let your Holy One see decay.[h](U) 36 For David, after serving God’s purpose in his own generation, fell asleep,(V) was buried with his fathers, and decayed,(W) 37 but the one God raised up did not decay. 38 Therefore, let it be known to you, brothers and sisters, that through this man forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you.(X)
