³⁸ There was also an inscription over him,^[a] “This is the King of the Jews.”

²⁶ The inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”

³⁷ Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

¹⁹ Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth,^[a] the King of the Jews.” ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this inscription because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew,^[b] in Latin, and in Greek. ²¹ Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ”^{(A) 22} Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

³ Then Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered, “You say so.”^(A)

³² Let the Messiah,^[a] the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.^(A)

³ They kept coming up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and striking him on the face.^(A)

¹⁸ And they began saluting him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Pilate Questions Jesus

¹¹ Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.”
