⁴⁹ When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”^{(A) 50} And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

⁵¹ But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

¹⁰ Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

¹¹ Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup^(A) the Father has given me?”

¹² Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials^(B) arrested Jesus. They bound him ¹³ and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,^(C) the high priest that year. ¹⁴ Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.^(D)

Peter’s First Denial^(E)

¹⁵ Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,^(F) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,^(G)

⁵¹ With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,^(A) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.^(B)

⁵² “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.^{(C) 53} Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?^{(D) 54} But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(E) that say it must happen in this way?”

⁵⁵ In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,^(F) and you did not arrest me.
