The Prayer in the Garden^(A)

^36 (B)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” ³⁷ And He took with Him Peter and ^(C)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. ³⁸ Then He said to them, ^(D)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

³⁹ He went a little farther and fell on His face, and ^(E)prayed, saying, ^(F)“O My Father, if it is possible, ^(G)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, ^(H)not as I will, but as You will.”

⁴⁰ Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? ^41 (I)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. ^(J)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴² Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, ^[a]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” ⁴³ And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

⁴⁴ So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. ⁴⁵ Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour ^[b]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being ^(K)betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Serving for God’s Glory

⁷ But ^(A)the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.

^18 (A)praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, ^(B)being watchful to this end with all perseverance and ^(C)supplication for all the saints— ¹⁹ and for me, that utterance may be given to me, ^(D)that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,

⁴⁶ Then He said to them, “Why ^(A)do you sleep? Rise and ^(B)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

³⁵ He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. ³⁶ And He said, ^(E)“Abba, Father, ^(F)all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; ^(G)nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”

³⁷ Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? ^38 (H)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. ^(I)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

³⁹ Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. ⁴⁰ And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.

⁴¹ Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! ^(J)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. ^42 (K)Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

¹⁰ Because you have kept ^[a]My command to persevere, ^(A)I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon ^(B)the whole world, to test those who dwell ^(C)on the earth.

⁸ Be ^[a]sober, be ^[b]vigilant; ^[c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. ⁹ Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
