Luke 22:25-27
New International Version
25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(A) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(B) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(C)
Matthew 20:26-28
New International Version
26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(A) 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man(B) did not come to be served, but to serve,(C) and to give his life as a ransom(D) for many.”
Matthew 23:8-12
New International Version
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(A) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(B) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(C)
Luke 12:35-38
New International Version
Watchfulness(A)(B)
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(C) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(D) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
John 13:5-16
New International Version
5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(A) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(B)
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(C) though not every one of you.”(D) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(E) and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(F) and ‘Lord,’(G) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(H) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(I) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(J) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
1 Peter 5:2-3
New International Version
2 Be shepherds of God’s flock(A) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(B) not pursuing dishonest gain,(C) but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over(D) those entrusted to you, but being examples(E) to the flock.
