20 And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together,
2 And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority?
3 And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Answer me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
5 But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him?
6 But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
7 And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.
8 And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.
9 And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty.
11 And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty.
12 And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
13 Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.
14 Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15 So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
16 He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.
17 But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.
20 And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?
23 But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?
24 shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar's.
25 And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's.
26 And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace.
27 And there came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him,
28 Saying: Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he leave no children, that his brother should take her to wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the next took her to wife, and he also died childless.
31 And the third took her. And in like manner all the seven, and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 In the resurrection therefore, whose wife of them shall she be? For all the seven had her to wife.
34 And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, shall neither be married, nor take wives.
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead rise again, Moses also shewed, at the bush, when he called the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
38 For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him.
39 And some of the scribes answering, said to him: Master, thou hast said well.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any more questions.
41 But he said to them: How say they that Christ is the son of David?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thy enemies thy footstool.
44 David then calleth him Lord: and how is he his son?
45 And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:
46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts:
47 Who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayer. These shall receive greater damnation.

5 Ei au început să discute între ei şi să zică: „Dacă vom răspunde: «Din cer!», ne va întreba: «Atunci de ce nu l-aţi crezut?», 6 iar dacă vom răspunde: «De la oameni!», tot poporul ne va ucide cu pietre, fiindcă este convins că Ioan a fost un profet.“ 7 Aşa că I-au răspuns că nu ştiu de unde era. 8 Atunci şi Isus le-a zis:
– Nici Eu nu vă spun cu ce autoritate fac aceste lucruri.

9 Apoi a început să spună poporului următoarea pildă:
„Un om a plantat o vie[a], a arendat-o unor viticultori şi a plecat într-o călătorie pentru o vreme îndelungată. 10 La vremea roadelor a trimis un sclav la viticultori, ca să-i dea partea cuvenită din rodul viei.
Viticultorii însă l-au bătut şi l-au trimis înapoi cu mâinile goale. 11 A mai trimis un alt sclav, dar şi pe acela l-au bătut, l-au înjosit şi l-au trimis înapoi cu mâinile goale. 12 A mai trimis un al treilea, dar şi pe acesta l-au rănit şi l-au aruncat afară.
13 Atunci stăpânul viei a zis: «Ce să fac? Îl voi trimite pe fiul meu preaiubit; poate că pe el îl vor respecta!» 14 Dar viticultorii, când l-au văzut, şi-au zis unii altora: «Acesta este moştenitorul! Să-l omorâm pentru ca moştenirea să fie a noastră!» 15 Şi l-au scos afară din vie şi l-au omorât.
Aşadar, ce le va face stăpânul viei? 16 Va veni şi-i va nimici pe viticultorii aceia, iar via o va da altora.“
Când au auzit ei aceste cuvinte, au zis: „Să nu se întâmple una ca asta!“[b] 17 Dar El i-a privit şi le-a zis: „Atunci ce înseamnă următorul pasaj unde a fost scris:
«Piatra pe care au respins-o zidarii
a devenit piatra din capul unghiului.»[c]?
18 Oricine cade peste piatra aceea va fi sfărâmat în bucăţi, iar pe acela peste care cade ea, îl va zdrobi.“
19 Chiar în ceasul acela cărturarii şi conducătorii preoţilor au căutat să pună mâna pe El, dar le-a fost frică de popor; căci ei ştiau că împotriva lor spusese Isus această pildă.
Tributul datorat Cezarului
20 Au început să-L urmărească îndeaproape şi au trimis nişte spioni, care se prefăceau că sunt oameni drepţi, ca să-L prindă cu vorba şi să-L poată da astfel pe mâna puterii şi autorităţii guvernatorului. 21 Aceştia L-au întrebat:
– Învăţătorule, ştim că vorbeşti şi-i înveţi pe oameni corect, că nu eşti părtinitor, ci îi înveţi calea lui Dumnezeu în adevăr. 22 Se cuvine să plătim tribut Cezarului[d] sau nu?
23 El însă şi-a dat seama de viclenia lor şi le-a zis:
24 – Arătaţi-mi un denar[e]! Chipul şi inscripţia de pe el, ale cui sunt?
– Ale Cezarului, au răspuns ei.
25 El le-a zis:
– Aşadar, daţi Cezarului ce este al Cezarului, iar lui Dumnezeu ce este al lui Dumnezeu![f]
26 Astfel ei n-au putut să-L prindă cu vorba în faţa poporului şi, miraţi de răspunsul Lui, au tăcut.
Despre înviere
27 Apoi au venit la El nişte saduchei[g], care zic că nu există înviere, şi L-au întrebat:
28 – Învăţătorule, Moise ne-a scris că dacă fratele cuiva moare fără să aibă copii şi-i rămâne astfel doar soţia, fratele acestuia trebuie să se căsătorească cu văduva şi să-i ridice un urmaş fratelui său.[h] 29 Erau şapte fraţi. Primul şi-a luat o soţie, dar a murit fără să aibă copii. 30 Cu al doilea s-a întâmplat la fel. 31 Al treilea s-a căsătorit şi el cu văduva şi tot aşa toţi cei şapte; şi au murit fără să aibă copii. 32 Femeia a murit ultima dintre toţi. 33 Deci, la înviere, soţia căruia dintre ei va fi femeia? Căci toţi şapte au avut-o de soţie!
34 Isus le-a răspuns:
– Copiii[i] veacului acestuia se însoară şi se mărită, 35 dar cei care vor fi consideraţi vrednici să aibă parte de veacul acela şi de învierea dintre cei morţi nici nu se vor mai însura, nici nu se vor mai mărita, 36 căci ei nu mai pot muri pentru că sunt ca îngerii şi sunt fiii lui Dumnezeu, fiind fii ai învierii. 37 Iar cu privire la faptul că cei morţi sunt înviaţi, însuşi Moise a făcut cunoscut acest lucru, acolo unde scrie despre tufiş, când vorbeşte despre Domnul ca fiind Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Dumnezeul lui Isaac şi Dumnezeul lui Iacov[j]. 38 Ori El nu este un Dumnezeu al celor morţi, ci al celor vii, căci pentru El toţi sunt vii.
39 Atunci unii dintre cărturari I-au zis:
– Învăţătorule, bine ai zis!
40 Căci nu mai îndrăzneau să-I pună nici o întrebare.
Al cui fiu este Cristos?
41 El însă i-a întrebat:
– Cum de zic ei despre Cristos că este fiul lui David? 42 Căci David însuşi, în cartea Psalmilor, spune:
„Domnul I-a zis Domnului meu[k]:
«Şezi la dreapta Mea,
43 până voi face din duşmanii Tăi
aşternut[l] al picioarelor Tale!»“[m]
44 Aşadar, David Îl numeşte „Domn“; deci cum este El fiul lui?
45 Apoi le-a vorbit ucenicilor în auzul întregului popor: 46 „Păziţi-vă de cărturari, cărora le place să umble în robe lungi şi care iubesc să fie salutaţi prin pieţe şi să li se dea scaunele de onoare în sinagogi şi locurile de onoare la mese. 47 Ei devorează casele văduvelor şi fac rugăciuni lungi de ochii lumii. Aceştia vor primi o condamnare mult mai mare.“

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(A)
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(B) and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(D)
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism(E)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(F) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(G)
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(H)
9 He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(I) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(J) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(K) perhaps they will respect him.’
14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(L) and give the vineyard to others.”
When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(N)
19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(O) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(P)
Paying Taxes to Caesar(Q)
20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(R) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(S) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(T) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(U) and to God what is God’s.”
26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The Resurrection and Marriage(V)
27 Some of the Sadducees,(W) who say there is no resurrection,(X) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(Y) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(Z) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(AA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b](AB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(AC)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AD)
41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(AE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[c](AF)
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
