20 One day, as Yeshua was teaching the people at the Temple, making known the Good News, the head cohanim and the Torah-teachers, along with the elders, came up to him and said, “Tell us, what s’mikhah do you have that authorizes you to do these things? Who gave you this s’mikhah?” He answered, “I too will ask you a question. Tell me, the immersion of Yochanan — was it from Heaven or from a human source?” They discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From Heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From a human source,’ all the people will stone us, because they’re convinced that Yochanan was a prophet.” So they answered, “We don’t know where it came from.” Yeshua said to them, “Then I won’t tell you by what s’mikhah I do these things.”

Next Yeshua told the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it to tenant-farmers and went away for a long time. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to receive his share of the crop from the vineyard; but the tenants beat him up and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant; they beat him too, insulted him and sent him away empty-handed. 12 He sent yet a third; this one they wounded and threw out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my son, whom I love; maybe they will respect him.’ 14 But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours!’ 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“Now what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and put an end to those tenants and give the vineyard to others!” When the people heard this, they said, “Heaven forbid!” 17 But Yeshua looked searchingly at them and said, “Then what is this which is written in the Tanakh,

‘The very rock which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?[a]

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken in pieces; but if it falls on him, he will be crushed to powder!”

19 The Torah-teachers and the head cohanim would have seized him at that very moment, because they knew that he had aimed this parable at them, but they were afraid of the people.

20 So they kept a close watch on the situation. They sent spies who hypocritically represented themselves as righteous, so that they might seize hold of something Yeshua said, as an excuse to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor. 21 They put to him this sh’eilah: “Rabbi, we know that you speak and teach straightforwardly, showing no partiality but really teaching what God’s way is. 22 Does Torah permit us to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor or not?” 23 But he, spotting their craftiness, said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius! Whose name and picture does it have?” “The Emperor’s,” they replied. 25 “Then,” he said to them, “give the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor. And give God what belongs to God!” 26 They were unable to trap him by anything he said publicly; indeed, amazed at his answer, they fell silent.

27 Some Tz’dukim, who say there is no resurrection, came to Yeshua 28 and put to him a sh’eilah: “Rabbi, Moshe wrote for us that if a man dies leaving a wife but no children, his brother must take the wife and have children to preserve the man’s family line.[b] 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died childless, 30 then the second 31 and third took her, and likewise all seven, but they all died without leaving children. 32 Lastly, the woman also died. 33 In the Resurrection, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”

34 Yeshua said to them, “In this age, men and women marry; 35 but those judged worthy of the age to come, and of resurrection from the dead, do not get married, 36 because they can no longer die. Being children of the Resurrection, they are like angels; indeed, they are children of God.

37 “But even Moshe showed that the dead are raised; for in the passage about the bush, he calls Adonai ‘the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov.’[c] 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living — to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the Torah-teachers answered, “Well spoken, Rabbi.” 40 For they no longer dared put to him a sh’eilah. 41 But he said to them, “How is it that people say the Messiah is David’s son?” 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

43 Adonai said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’[d]

44 David thus calls him ‘Lord.’ So how can he be David’s son?”

45 Within the hearing of all the people, Yeshua said to his talmidim, 46 “Watch out for the kind of Torah-teachers that like to walk around in robes and be greeted deferentially in the marketplaces, the kind that like to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets, 47 the kind that swallow up widows’ houses while making a show of davvening at great length. Their punishment will be all the worse!”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

20 On one of the days, as Jesus was instructing the people in the temple [area] and preaching the good news (gospel), [a]the chief priests and the scribes along with the elders confronted Him,(A) and said to Him, “Tell us by what kind of authority You are doing these things? Or who is the one who gave You this authority?” Jesus replied, “I will also ask you a question. You tell Me: The baptism of John [the Baptist]—was it from heaven [that is, ordained by God] or from men?” They discussed and debated it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are firmly convinced that John was a prophet.” So they replied that they did not know from where it came. Then Jesus said to them, “Nor am I telling you by what [kind of] authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vineyard Owner

Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey for a long time [to another country].(B) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant [as his representative] to the tenants, so that they would give him his share of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed. 11 So he again sent another servant; they also beat him and dishonored and treated him disgracefully and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third; and this one too they wounded and threw out [of the vineyard]. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will have respect for him.’ 14 But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves, saying, ‘This [man] is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw the son out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and put these tenants to death and will give the vineyard to others.” When the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders heard this, they said, “May it never be!” 17 But Jesus looked at them and said, “What then is [the meaning of] this that is written:

The [very] Stone which the builders rejected,
this became the chief Cornerstone’?(C)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken and shattered in pieces; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”(D)

Tribute to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to [find a way to] arrest Him at that very hour, but they were afraid of the people; because they understood that He spoke this parable against them. 20 So they watched [for a chance to trap] Him. They sent spies who pretended to be upright and sincere, in order that they might catch Him in some statement [that they could distort and use against Him], so that they could turn Him over to the control and authority of [Pilate] the governor.(E) 21 They asked Him, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and that You show no partiality to anyone, but teach the way of God truthfully. 22 Is it lawful [according to Jewish law and tradition] for us to pay taxes (tribute money) to [b]Caesar or not?” 23 But He saw through their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [Roman] denarius. Whose image and inscription does the coin have?” They answered, “[the Emperor Tiberius] Caesar’s.” 25 He said to them, “Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 They were not able to seize on anything He said in the presence of the people; and being unnerved at His reply, they were silent.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 Now some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Him(F) 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us [a law that] if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife and no children, his brother should [c]marry the wife and raise children for his brother.(G) 29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless. 30 And the second, 31 and the third married her, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 So in the [life after] resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of this [world and present] age marry and [the women] are given in marriage; 35 but those who are considered worthy to gain that [other world and that future] age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 and they cannot die again, because they are [immortal] like the angels (equal to, angel-like). And they are [d]children of God, being [e]participants in the resurrection. 37 But [as for the fact] that the dead are raised [from death], even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.(H) 38 Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living [so these forefathers will be among the resurrected]; for all live [in a definite relationship] to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes replied, “Teacher, you have spoken well [so that there is no room for blame].” 40 And they did not dare to question Him further about anything [because of the wisdom He displayed in His answers].

41 Then He said to them, “How is it that people say that the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) is David’s son?(I) 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

The Lord (the Father) said to my Lord (the Son, the Messiah),
Sit at My right hand,
43 
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’(J)

44 [f]So David calls Him (the Son) ‘Lord,’ and how then is He David’s son?”

45 And with all the people listening, He said to His disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes [displaying their prominence], and love respectful greetings in the [crowded] market places, and [g]chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. 47 These [men] who confiscate and devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense [to appear devout] offer long prayers. These [men] will receive the greater [sentence of] condemnation.”

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

32 Last of all the woman died also.

33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

Ngụ Ngôn Về Vườn Nho Và Các Tá Điền(B)

Ngài bắt đầu kể ngụ ngôn này cho dân chúng: “Một người kia trồng một vườn nho, cho người làm công thuê, rồi đi xa một thời gian dài. 10 Đến mùa, chủ sai một đầy tớ tới gặp các người làm công để thu phần hoa lợi họ sẽ nộp cho mình. Nhưng các người làm công đánh đập đầy tớ ấy và đuổi về tay không. 11 Chủ sai một đầy tớ khác, nhưng họ cũng đánh đập, chửi mắng rồi đuổi về tay không. 12 Chủ lại sai đầy tớ thứ ba, nhưng họ đánh đập nó trọng thương rồi quăng ra ngoài.

13 Chủ vườn nho nói: ‘Ta làm gì bây giờ? Ta sẽ sai con trai yêu dấu của ta đi, chắc họ sẽ nể con ta.’

14 Nhưng khi thấy con trai chủ, các người làm công bàn với nhau: ‘Đây là đứa con thừa tự. Ta hãy giết nó đi, gia tài sẽ thuộc về chúng ta.’ 15 Họ quăng con trai chủ ra bên ngoài vườn nho và giết đi. Vậy, chủ vườn nho sẽ xử họ thế nào? 16 Chủ sẽ đến, diệt bọn người làm công ấy, và giao vườn cho người khác.”

Nghe xong, họ nói: “Đời nào có chuyện ấy!”

17 Nhìn thẳng họ, Ngài hỏi: “Thế thì câu Kinh Thánh này có ý nghĩa gì:

‘Phiến đá bị các thợ nề loại bỏ
    Lại trở nên đá đầu góc nhà?’[a]

18 Ai rơi nhằm đá ấy sẽ bị nát vụn; còn đá ấy rơi nhằm ai thì nghiền kẻ ấy ra như bột!”[b]

19 Ngay giờ ấy, các giáo sư Kinh Luật và các thượng tế tìm cách bắt Ngài, vì họ biết Ngài dùng ngụ ngôn này ám chỉ họ, nhưng họ còn sợ dân chúng.

20 Họ theo dõi Ngài, sai mật thám giả dạng người lương thiện đi rình mò bắt lỗi Ngài trong lời nói để nộp Ngài cho các nhà cầm quyền và tòa thống đốc[c] La Mã. 21 Bọn mật thám gài hỏi Ngài: “Chúng tôi biết Thầy nói và dạy cách chính trực, không thiên vị ai, nhưng trung thực dạy đuờng lối của Đức Chúa Trời. 22 Vậy, chúng tôi có nên đóng thuế cho Sê-sa[d] hay không?”

23 Nhận thấy mưu kế quỷ quyệt[e] của họ, Ngài bảo: 24 “Hãy đưa Ta xem một đồng tiền! Hình và danh hiệu của ai đây?”

25 Họ đáp: “Của Sê-sa.” Ngài phán: “Thế thì, những gì của Sê-sa hãy trả cho Sê-sa; những gì của Đức Chúa Trời hãy trả cho Đức Chúa Trời!”

26 Họ không thể nào bắt lỗi lời Ngài trước mặt dân chúng. Sửng sốt về câu trả lời của Ngài, nên họ đành câm miệng.

Câu Hỏi Về Sự Sống Lại(C)

27 Vài người Sa-đu-sê là phái phủ nhận sự sống lại, đến gần hỏi Ngài: 28 “Thưa Thầy, Môi-se đã ghi trong Kinh Luật cho chúng ta: ‘Nếu một người nam có anh cưới vợ rồi chết không con, người đó phải cưới chị dâu để sinh con nối dõi cho anh.’ 29 Gia đình kia có bảy anh em, cậu cả cưới vợ rồi chết không con. 30-31 Cậu hai, cậu ba cho đến cậu bảy cũng thế, cậu nào cũng lấy nàng rồi chết không con. 32 Rốt cuộc, người đàn bà cũng qua đời. 33 Vậy, trong ngày sống lại, nàng sẽ làm vợ của ai đây? Vì bảy anh em đều là chồng của nàng cả!”

34 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Người[f] ở cõi đời này mới cưới gả, 35 chứ những người được kể là xứng đáng hưởng cõi đời sau và được sống lại từ cõi chết sẽ không còn cưới gả, 36 bởi họ không thể chết được nữa mà giống như[g] thiên sứ và là con cái của Đức Chúa Trời vì đã được sống lại.[h] 37 Về sự kiện người chết sống lại, chính Môi-se đã cho thấy, qua câu chuyện về bụi gai khi ông gọi Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của Áp-ra-ham, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sác và Đức Chúa Trời của Gia-cốp. 38 Ngài không phải là Đức Chúa Trời của người chết nhưng của người sống, vì tất cả đều sống đối với Ngài.”

39 Vài giáo sư Kinh Luật nhìn nhận: “Thưa Thầy, Thầy nói rất đúng!” 40 Họ không còn dám gài hỏi Ngài điều gì nữa.

Con Đa-vít(D)

41 Nhưng Đức Giê-su hỏi lại họ: “Sao người ta gọi Chúa Cứu Thế là con của Đa-vít? 42 Vì chính Đa-vít đã viết trong Thánh Thi:

‘Chúa phán bảo Chúa tôi:
    Hãy ngồi bên phải Ta
43 Cho đến khi Ta bắt các thù địch con làm bục chân con.’

44 Đa-vít đã gọi Chúa Cứu Thế là Chúa thì sao Ngài lại là con Đa-vít được?”

45 Trong khi cả dân chúng đang nghe, Ngài dạy các môn đệ: 46 “Hãy đề phòng các giáo sư Kinh Luật, là những kẻ ưa mặc áo dài để đi qua đi lại, thích người ta chào mình giữa chợ, và chọn ngồi những ghế hạng nhất trong hội đường và ghế danh dự nơi bàn tiệc. 47 Họ nuốt nhà cửa của đàn bà góa, lại còn giả bộ cầu nguyện dài dòng! Họ sẽ bị hình phạt nặng nề hơn!”
