20 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.
11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.
13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(A)
20 Now (B)it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him 2 and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, (C)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”
3 But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: 4 The (D)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”
5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [a]then did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, (E)for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers(F)
9 Then He began to tell the people this parable: (G)“A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [b]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at [c]vintage-time he (H)sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the (I)heir. Come, (J)let us kill him, that the inheritance may be (K)ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and (L)killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to (M)others.”
And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”
17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
(N)‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?
18 Whoever falls on that stone will be (O)broken; but (P)on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [d]feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(Q)
20 (R)So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.
21 Then they asked Him, saying, (S)“Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [e]“Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”
They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”
25 And He said to them, (T)“Render[f] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.
The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(U)
27 (V)Then some of the Sadducees, (W)who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second [g]took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [h]also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”
34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are (X)counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for (Y)they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, (Z)being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord (AA)‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for (AB)all live to Him.”
39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.
Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(AC)
41 And He said to them, (AD)“How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
(AE)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; (AF)how is He then his Son?”
Beware of the Scribes(AG)
45 (AH)Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 (AI)“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, (AJ)love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 (AK)who devour widows’ houses, and for a (AL)pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

20 Es geschah aber an einem jener Tage, als er das Volk im Tempel lehrte und das Evangelium verkündigte, da traten die obersten Priester und die Schriftgelehrten samt den Ältesten herzu
2 und redeten mit ihm und sprachen: Sage uns, in welcher Vollmacht tust du dies? Und wer hat dir diese Vollmacht gegeben?
3 Er aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Auch ich will euch ein Wort fragen! So sagt mir:
4 War die Taufe des Johannes vom Himmel oder von Menschen?
5 Da überlegten sie bei sich selbst und sprachen: Wenn wir sagen: Vom Himmel, so wird er fragen: Warum habt ihr ihm dann nicht geglaubt?
6 Wenn wir aber sagen: Von Menschen, so wird das ganze Volk uns steinigen; denn es ist überzeugt, dass Johannes ein Prophet war!
7 Und sie antworteten, sie wüssten nicht woher.
8 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: So sage ich euch auch nicht, in welcher Vollmacht ich dies tue.
Das Gleichnis von den Weingärtnern
9 Er fing aber an, dem Volk dieses Gleichnis zu sagen: Ein gewisser Mensch pflanzte einen Weinberg und verpachtete ihn an Weingärtner und hielt sich längere Zeit außer Landes auf.
10 Und als es Zeit war, sandte er einen Knecht zu den Weingärtnern, damit sie ihm [seinen Anteil] von der Frucht des Weinbergs gäben. Die Weingärtner aber schlugen ihn und schickten ihn mit leeren Händen fort.
11 Und er fuhr fort und sandte einen anderen Knecht. Sie aber schlugen auch diesen und beschimpften ihn und jagten ihn mit leeren Händen davon.
12 Und er fuhr fort und sandte einen dritten; aber auch diesen verwundeten sie und warfen ihn hinaus.
13 Da sprach der Herr des Weinbergs: Was soll ich tun? Ich will meinen Sohn senden, den geliebten; wenn sie den sehen, werden sie sich vielleicht scheuen!
14 Als aber die Weingärtner diesen sahen, sprachen sie untereinander: Das ist der Erbe! Kommt, lasst uns ihn töten, damit das Erbgut uns gehört!
15 Und sie stießen ihn zum Weinberg hinaus und töteten ihn. Was wird nun der Herr des Weinbergs mit ihnen tun?
16 Er wird kommen und diese Weingärtner umbringen und den Weinberg anderen geben! Als sie das hörten, sprachen sie: Das sei ferne!
17 Er aber blickte sie an und sprach: Was bedeutet denn das, was geschrieben steht: »Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, der ist zum Eckstein geworden?«[a]
18 Jeder, der auf diesen Stein fällt, wird zerschmettert werden; auf wen er aber fällt, den wird er zermalmen!
19 Da suchten die obersten Priester und die Schriftgelehrten Hand an ihn zu legen in derselben Stunde; aber sie fürchteten das Volk; denn sie erkannten, dass er dieses Gleichnis im Blick auf sie gesagt hatte.
Die Frage nach der Steuer
20 Und sie lauerten ihm auf und sandten Aufpasser ab, die sich stellen sollten, als wären sie redlich, um ihn bei einem Wort zu fassen, damit sie ihn der Obrigkeit und der Gewalt des Statthalters ausliefern könnten.
21 Und sie fragten ihn und sprachen: Meister, wir wissen, dass du richtig redest und lehrst und nicht die Person ansiehst, sondern den Weg Gottes der Wahrheit gemäß lehrst.
22 Ist es uns erlaubt, dem Kaiser die Steuer zu geben, oder nicht?
23 Da er aber ihre Arglist erkannte, sprach er zu ihnen: Was versucht ihr mich?
24 Zeigt mir einen Denar! Wessen Bild und Aufschrift trägt er? Sie aber antworteten und sprachen: Des Kaisers.
25 Er aber sagte ihnen: So gebt doch dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist, und Gott, was Gottes ist!
26 Und sie konnten ihn nicht bei diesem Wort fassen vor dem Volk; und sie verwunderten sich über seine Antwort und schwiegen.
Die Sadduzäer und die Frage nach der Auferstehung
27 Da traten aber etliche der Sadduzäer herzu, die bestreiten, dass es eine Auferstehung gibt, und sie fragten ihn
28 und sprachen: Meister, Mose hat uns vorgeschrieben: Wenn jemandes Bruder eine Frau hat und kinderlos stirbt, so soll dessen Bruder die Frau nehmen und seinem Bruder Nachkommen erwecken.
29 Nun waren da sieben Brüder. Der erste nahm eine Frau und starb kinderlos.
30 Da nahm der zweite die Frau und starb auch kinderlos.
31 Und der dritte nahm sie, ebenso alle sieben, und sie hinterließen keine Kinder bei ihrem Tod.
32 Zuletzt aber, nach allen, starb auch die Frau.
33 Wessen Frau wird sie nun in der Auferstehung sein? Denn alle sieben haben sie zur Frau gehabt.
34 Und Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Die Kinder dieser Weltzeit heiraten und lassen sich heiraten;
35 diejenigen aber, die gewürdigt werden, jene Weltzeit zu erlangen und die Auferstehung aus den Toten, die werden weder heiraten noch sich heiraten lassen,
36 denn sie können nicht mehr sterben; denn sie sind den Engeln gleich und Söhne Gottes, da sie Söhne der Auferstehung sind.
37 Dass aber die Toten auferstehen, hat auch Mose angedeutet bei [der Stelle von] dem Dornbusch, wo er den Herrn den Gott Abrahams und den Gott Isaaks und den Gott Jakobs nennt.
38 Er ist aber nicht ein Gott der Toten, sondern der Lebendigen; denn für ihn leben alle.
39 Da antworteten etliche der Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Meister, du hast gut geantwortet!
40 Und sie getrauten sich nicht mehr, ihn etwas zu fragen.
Wessen Sohn ist der Christus? Warnung vor den Schriftgelehrten
41 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wieso sagen sie, dass der Christus Davids Sohn sei?
42 Und doch sagt David selbst im Buch der Psalmen: »Der Herr sprach zu meinem Herrn: Setze dich zu meiner Rechten,
43 bis ich deine Feinde hinlege als Schemel für deine Füße!«[b]
44 David nennt ihn also Herr; wie kann er dann sein Sohn sein?
45 Als aber das ganze Volk zuhörte, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:
46 Hütet euch vor den Schriftgelehrten, die gern im Talar einhergehen und die Begrüßungen auf den Märkten lieben und die ersten Sitze in den Synagogen und die obersten Plätze bei den Mahlzeiten;
47 sie fressen die Häuser der Witwen und sprechen zum Schein lange Gebete; diese werden ein umso schwereres Gericht empfangen!
