⁴⁶ “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes and who love respectful greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets.^(A)

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For you love to have the seat of honor in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces.^(A)

Jesus Denounces the Scribes

³⁸ As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces^{(A) 39} and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets!

Humility and Hospitality

⁷ When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable.^(A)

³ Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.^{(A) 4} Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.^{(B) 5} Let the same mind be in you that was^[a] in Christ Jesus,^(C)

A Warning against Hypocrisy

12 Meanwhile, when the crowd had gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy.^(A)

Diotrephes and Demetrius

⁹ I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not welcome us.

¹⁰ love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.

⁵ They do all their deeds to be seen by others, for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long.^{(A) 6} They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues^{(B) 7} and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to have people call them rabbi.

⁶ Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”^(A)
