14 And the armies of heaven, wearing fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule[a] them with a scepter of iron; he will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.(A) 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, “King of kings and Lord of lords.”(B)

The Beast and Its Armies Defeated

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly in midheaven, “Come, gather for the great supper of God,(C) 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of the mighty, the flesh of horses and their riders—flesh of all, both free and slave, both small and great.”(D) 19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to wage war against the rider on the horse and against his army.(E) 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed in its presence the signs by which he deceived those who had received the brand of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were killed by the sword of the rider on the horse, the sword that came from his mouth, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

Psalm 2

God’s Promise to His Anointed

Why do the nations conspire
    and the peoples plot in vain?(A)
The kings of the earth set themselves,
    and the rulers take counsel together,
    against the Lord and his anointed, saying,(B)
“Let us burst their bonds apart
    and cast their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs;
    the Lord has them in derision.(C)
Then he will speak to them in his wrath
    and terrify them in his fury, saying,(D)
“I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.”(E)

I will tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have begotten you.(F)
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage
    and the ends of the earth your possession.(G)
You shall break them with a rod of iron
    and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”(H)

In return for my love they accuse me,
    even while I make prayer for them.[a](A)
So they reward me evil for good
    and hatred for my love.(B)

They say,[b] “Appoint a wicked man against him;
    let an accuser stand on his right.(C)
When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
    let his prayer be counted as sin.(D)

13 May his posterity be cut off;

14 May the iniquity of his father[d] be remembered before the Lord,

15 Let them be before the Lord continually,
    and may his[e] memory be cut off from the earth.(K)
16 For he did not remember to show kindness
    but pursued the poor and needy
    and the brokenhearted to their death.(L)
17 He loved to curse; let curses come on him.
    He did not like blessing; may it be far from him.(M)
18 He clothed himself with cursing as his coat;
    may it soak into his body like water,
    like oil into his bones.(N)
19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around himself,
    like a belt that he wears every day.”

20 May that be the reward of my accusers from the Lord,
    of those who speak evil against my life.(O)
