Luke 20:27-47

The Resurrection and Marriage^(A)

²⁷Some of the Sadducees,^(B) who say there is no resurrection,^(C) came to Jesus with a question. ²⁸“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.^(D) ²⁹Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. ³⁰The second ³¹and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. ³²Finally, the woman died too. ³³Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

³⁴Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. ³⁵But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come^(E) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, ³⁶and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,^(F) since they are children of the resurrection. ³⁷But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’^[a]^(G) ³⁸He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

³⁹Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” ⁴⁰And no one dared to ask him any more questions.^(H)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?^(I)

⁴¹Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?^(J) ⁴²David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
⁴³until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’^[b]^(K)

⁴⁴David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

⁴⁵While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, ⁴⁶“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.^(L) ⁴⁷They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

¹⁴Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;^(A)
    love and faithfulness go before you.^(B)
¹⁵Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
    who walk^(C) in the light^(D) of your presence, Lord.
¹⁶They rejoice in your name^(E) all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.
¹⁷For you are their glory and strength,^(F)
    and by your favor you exalt our horn.^[a]^(G)

¹⁹Once you spoke in a vision,
    to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
    I have raised up a young man from among the people.
²⁰I have found David^(J) my servant;^(K)
    with my sacred oil^(L) I have anointed^(M) him.
²¹My hand will sustain him;
    surely my arm will strengthen him.^(N)
²²The enemy will not get the better of him;^(O)
    the wicked will not oppress^(P) him.
²³I will crush his foes before him^(Q)
    and strike down his adversaries.^(R)
²⁴My faithful love will be with him,^(S)
    and through my name his horn^[c] will be exalted.
²⁵I will set his hand over the sea,
    his right hand over the rivers.^(T)
²⁶He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,^(U)
    my God, the Rock^(V) my Savior.’^(W)
²⁷And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,^(X)
    the most exalted^(Y) of the kings^(Z) of the earth.
²⁸I will maintain my love to him forever,
    and my covenant with him will never fail.^(AA)
²⁹I will establish his line forever,
    his throne as long as the heavens endure.^(AB)

³⁰“If his sons forsake my law
    and do not follow my statutes,
³¹if they violate my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
³²I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;^(AC)
³³but I will not take my love from him,^(AD)
    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
³⁴I will not violate my covenant
    or alter what my lips have uttered.^(AE)
³⁵Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
    and I will not lie to David—
³⁶that his line will continue forever
    and his throne endure before me like the sun;^(AF)
³⁷it will be established forever like the moon,
    the faithful witness in the sky.”^(AG)
