² and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, ^(A)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

²⁷ But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ^(A)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

¹⁸ So the Jews answered and said to Him, ^(A)“What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”

²⁸ And they said to Him, “By what ^(A)authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”

²⁹ But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: ³⁰ The ^(B)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

³¹ And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ ³² But if we say, ‘From men’ ”—they feared the people, for ^(C)all counted John to have been a prophet indeed. ³³ So they answered and said to Jesus, “We do not know.”

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned^(A)

^23 (B)Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and ^(C)said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”

²⁴ But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: ²⁵ The ^(D)baptism of ^(E)John—where was it from? From heaven or from men?”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ ²⁶ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we ^(F)fear the multitude, ^(G)for all count John as a prophet.” ²⁷ So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.”

And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¹⁴ Then he said, ^(A)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

So Moses ^(B)feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!”

Israel Resists the Holy Spirit

⁵¹ “You ^(A)stiff-necked^[a] and ^(B)uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.

³⁵ “This Moses whom they rejected, saying, ^(A)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer ^(B)by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. ^36 (C)He brought them out, after he had ^(D)shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, ^(E)and in the Red Sea, ^(F)and in the wilderness forty years.

Israel Rebels Against God

³⁷ “This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ^(G)‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. ^(H)Him^[a] you shall hear.’

^38 (I)“This is he who was in the ^[b]congregation in the wilderness with ^(J)the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, ^(K)the one who received the living ^(L)oracles^[c] to give to us, ³⁹ whom our fathers ^(M)would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt,

⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, ^(A)“By what power or by what name have you done this?”

^8 (B)Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: ⁹ If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, ¹⁰ let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, ^(C)that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, ^(D)whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.
