² and said to him, “Tell us ^(A)by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”

²⁷ But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ^(A)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

¹⁸ So the Jews said to him, ^(A)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

²⁸ and they said to him, ^(A)“By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” ²⁹ Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ³⁰ Was the baptism of John ^(B)from heaven or from man? Answer me.” ³¹ And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ^(C)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ ³² But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—^(D)they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was ^(E)a prophet. ³³ So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

^23 (A)And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him ^(B)as he was teaching, and said, ^(C)“By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” ²⁴ Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, ^(D)from where did it come? ^(E)From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ^(F)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ ²⁶ But if we say, ‘From man,’ ^(G)we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was ^(H)a prophet.” ²⁷ So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¹⁴ He answered, ^(A)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”

^51 (A)“You stiff-necked people, ^(B)uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. ^(C)As your fathers did, so do you.

³⁵ “This Moses, whom they rejected, ^(A)saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer ^(B)by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. ^36 (C)This man led them out, performing ^(D)wonders and signs ^(E)in Egypt and ^(F)at the Red Sea and ^(G)in the wilderness for ^(H)forty years. ³⁷ This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you ^(I)a prophet like me from your brothers.’ ³⁸ This is the one ^(J)who was in the congregation in the wilderness with ^(K)the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. ^(L)He received ^(M)living ^(N)oracles to give to us. ³⁹ Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and ^(O)in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, ^(A)“By what power or ^(B)by what name did you do this?” ⁸ Then Peter, ^(C)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, ⁹ if we are being examined today ^(D)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, ¹⁰ let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that ^(E)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, ^(F)whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well.
