⁸ And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

³⁴ But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion^(A) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, ³⁵ I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized^(B) it by its hair, struck it and killed it.

³⁹ I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen^(A) by day or night.^{(B) 40} This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.^(C)

⁸ All who have come before me^(A) are thieves and robbers,^(B) but the sheep have not listened to them. ⁹ I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.^[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. ¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,^(C) and have it to the full.^(D)

¹¹ “I am^(E) the good shepherd.^(F) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.^{(G) 12} The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.^(H) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

⁸ As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered^(A) and has become food for all the wild animals,^(B) and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,^(C)

Moses and the Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro^(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,^(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^(C) the mountain^(D) of God. ² There the angel of the Lord^(E) appeared to him in flames of fire^(F) from within a bush.^(G) Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
