The Shepherds and the Angels

⁸ And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

³⁴ But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, ³⁵ I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.

³⁹ What was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you. I bore the loss of it myself. ^(A)From my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. ⁴⁰ There I was: by day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.

⁸ All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. ⁹ I am the door. If anyone enters by me, ^(A)he will be saved and will go in and out and ^(B)find pasture. ¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal and ^(C)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. ^11 (D)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd ^(E)lays down his life for the sheep. ¹² He who is ^(F)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and ^(G)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and ^(H)scatters them.

^8 (A)As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because ^(B)my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep,

The Burning Bush

3 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the ^(A)mountain of God. ^2 (B)And ^(C)the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.
