⁴⁹ He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”^[a](A)

³⁸ for I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.^(A)

²⁹ And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.”^(A)

The Coming Messenger

3 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.^(A)

³⁴ Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.^(A)

⁴⁸ When his parents^[a] saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for you.”^(A)

¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.”^(A)

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

¹² Then Jesus entered the temple^[a] and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.^(A)

⁴ We^[a] must work the works of him who sent me^[b] while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.^(A)
