¹⁷ When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child,

³⁹ “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

³⁸ At that moment she came and began to praise God and to speak about the child^[a] to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.^(A)

The Reward of the Faithful

¹⁶ Then those who revered the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord took note and listened, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who revered the Lord and thought on his name.^(A)

²⁸ Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, ²⁹ “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah,^[a] can he?”^(A)

⁴¹ He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed^[a]).^{(A) 42} He brought Simon^[b] to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas”^[c] (which is translated Peter^[d]).^(B)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

⁴³ The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”^{(C) 44} Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.^{(D) 45} Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.”^{(E) 46} Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”^(F)
