46 And Mary[a] said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,(A)
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(B)
48 for he has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant.
    Surely from now on all generations will call me blessed,(C)
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name;(D)
50 indeed, his mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.(E)
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.(F)
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones
    and lifted up the lowly;(G)
53 he has filled the hungry with good things
    and sent the rich away empty.(H)
54 He has come to the aid of his child Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,(I)
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”(J)

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

  2. Luke 1:46 sn The following passage has been typeset as poetry because many scholars regard this passage as poetic or hymnic. These terms are used broadly to refer to the genre of writing, not to the content. There are two broad criteria for determining if a passage is poetic or hymnic: “(a) stylistic: a certain rhythmical lilt when the passages are read aloud, the presence of parallelismus membrorum (i.e., an arrangement into couplets), the semblance of some metre, and the presence of rhetorical devices such as alliteration, chiasmus, and antithesis; and (b) linguistic: an unusual vocabulary, particularly the presence of theological terms, which is different from the surrounding context” (P. T. O’Brien, Philippians [NIGTC], 188-89). Classifying a passage as hymnic or poetic is important because understanding this genre can provide keys to interpretation.
