⁷ And when they saw it, they all ^(A)grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

² And the Pharisees and the scribes ^(A)grumbled, saying, ^(B)“This man receives sinners and ^(C)eats with them.”

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If ^(A)this man were ^(B)a prophet, he ^(C)would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”

³⁴ The Son of Man has come ^(A)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, ^(B)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

¹¹ And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ^(A)“Why does your teacher eat with ^(B)tax collectors and sinners?”

³⁰ And the Pharisees and ^(A)their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, ^(B)“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

⁹ He also told this parable to some ^(A)who trusted ^(B)in themselves that they were righteous, ^(C)and treated others with contempt: ¹⁰ “Two men ^(D)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee, ^(E)standing by himself, prayed^{[a] (F)}thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ^12 (G)I fast twice a week; ^(H)I give tithes of all that I get.’ ¹³ But the tax collector, ^(I)standing far off, ^(J)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but ^(K)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, ^(L)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For ^(M)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The Parable of the Two Sons

^28 (A)“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in ^(B)the vineyard today.’ ²⁹ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he ^(C)changed his mind and went. ³⁰ And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, ^(D)the tax collectors and ^(E)the prostitutes go into ^(F)the kingdom of God before you.
