²³ Why, then, did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.’

⁴ Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?^{(A) 5} But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.^(B)

¹⁹ “You shall not charge interest on loans to another Israelite,^[a] interest on money, interest on provisions, interest on anything that is lent.^{(A) 20} On loans to a foreigner you may charge interest, but on loans to another Israelite^[b] you may not charge interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all your undertakings in the land that you are about to enter and possess.^(B)

²⁵ “If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not deal with them as a creditor; you shall not exact interest from them.^{(A) 26} If you take your neighbor’s cloak as guarantee, you shall restore it before the sun goes down, ²⁷ for it may be your neighbor’s only clothing to use as a cover. In what else shall that person sleep? And when your neighbor cries out to me, I will listen, for I am compassionate.
