³⁹ Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”^(A)

²⁶ Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”^(A)

²⁷ The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,”^(B) he answered.

²⁸ Then the man said, “Your name^(C) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[a](D) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”^(E)

The Little Children and Jesus^(A)

¹⁵ People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.

⁸ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity^[a] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.^(A)

⁹ “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;^(B) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. ¹⁰ For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

⁴⁰ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me^(A) for one hour?” he asked Peter. ⁴¹ “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(B) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴² He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”^(C)

⁴³ When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

⁸ Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.^(A)

³⁹ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”^(A)

³⁸ He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,^(A) have mercy^(B) on me!”
