²² When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money^[a] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”^(A)

³³ Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.^(A)

¹⁸ They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share,^{(A) 19} thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

²¹ Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money^[a] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”^(A)

Concerning Treasures

¹⁹ “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust^[a] consume and where thieves break in and steal,^{(A) 20} but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust^[b] consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.^(B)

⁹ And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth^[a] so that when it is gone they may welcome you into the eternal homes.^[b](A)

⁴² but few things are needed—indeed only one.^[a] Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”^(A)

Would-Be Followers of Jesus

⁵⁷ As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” ⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” ⁵⁹ To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”^{(A) 60} And Jesus^[a] said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹ Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” ⁶² And Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

⁸ But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.^(A)

¹³ Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have laid hold^[a] of it, but one thing I have laid hold of: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,^(A)
