²⁹ but on the day that Lot left Sodom it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all of them;

⁶ and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to destruction^[a] and made them an example of what is coming to the ungodly;^[b]

⁸ and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that is prophetically^[a] called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.^(A)

⁷ Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust,^[a] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.^(A)

²³ And you, Capernaum,

“For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.^{(A) 24} But I tell you that on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.”^(B)

⁴⁰ As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, says the Lord, so no one shall live there, nor shall anyone settle in her.^(A)

²³ all its soil burned out by sulfur and salt, nothing planted, nothing sprouting, unable to support any vegetation, like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord destroyed in his fierce anger^(A)— ²⁴ they and indeed all the nations will wonder, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What caused this great display of anger?’^{(B) 25} They will conclude, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
