The Parable of the Unjust Steward
16 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was [a]wasting his goods. 2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an (A)account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’
3 “Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’
5 “So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A hundred [b]measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred [c]measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ 8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than (B)the sons of light.
9 “And I say to you, (C)make friends for yourselves by unrighteous [d]mammon, that when [e]you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 (D)He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your (E)own?
13 (F)“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Law, the Prophets, and the Kingdom
14 Now the Pharisees, (G)who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they [f]derided Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who (H)justify yourselves (I)before men, but (J)God knows your hearts. For (K)what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 (L)“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. 17 (M)And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [g]tittle of the law to fail.
18 (N)“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and [h]fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with [i]the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to (O)Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and (P)cool my tongue; for I (Q)am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, (R)remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, (S)‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, (T)‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, (U)neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

True Wealth
16 Jesus also said to his ·followers [disciples], “Once there was a rich man who had a manager to take care of his business. This manager was accused of ·cheating him [wasting/squandering his assests/possessions]. 2 So he called the manager in and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give me a ·report [accounting] of ·what you have done with my money [L your management], because you ·can’t be my manager any longer [are going to be fired].’ 3 The manager thought to himself, ‘What will I do since my master is ·taking my job away from [about to fire] me? I am not strong enough to ·dig ditches [or work the soil; L dig], and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I’ll do so that when I ·lose my job [L am removed from management] people will welcome me into their homes.’
5 “So the manager called in everyone who owed the master any money. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe [L my master]?’ 6 He answered, ‘Eight hundred gallons [C Greek: one hundred batoi; a batos was about eight gallons] of olive oil.’ The manager said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write ·four hundred gallons [Greek: fifty (batoi)].’ 7 Then the manager asked another one, ‘How much do you owe?’ He answered, ‘·One thousand bushels [Greek: one hundred koroi; a koros was about ten bushels] of wheat.’ Then the manager said to him, ‘Take your bill and write eight hundred bushels [C Greek: eighty (koroi)].’ 8 So, the master praised the ·dishonest [unrighteous; unjust] manager for being ·clever [shrewd; prudent]. Yes, ·worldly people [L the children of this age] are more ·clever [shrewd; prudent] with their own ·kind [contemporaries; generation] than ·spiritual people [L the children of light] are.
9 “I tell you, make friends for yourselves using ·worldly riches [L the mammon/wealth of unrighteousness] so that when those riches ·are gone [fail; run out], you will be welcomed in ·those homes that continue forever [eternal dwellings/tents; C God’s presence]. 10 Whoever ·can be trusted [is faithful] with a little ·can also be trusted [is also faithful] with a lot, and whoever is ·dishonest [unjust] with a little is ·dishonest [unjust] with a lot. 11 If [L therefore] you ·cannot be trusted [have not been faithful] with ·worldly riches [L unrighteous mammon], then who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you ·cannot be trusted [have not been faithful] with things that belong to someone else, who will give you things of your own?
13 “No servant can serve two ·masters [lords]. [L For] The servant will hate one master and love the other, or will ·follow [be devoted/loyal to] one master and ·refuse to follow [despise] the other. You cannot serve both God and ·worldly riches [money; L mammon].”
God’s Law Cannot Be Changed
14 The Pharisees, who loved money, were listening to all these things and ·made fun of [derided; ridiculed] Jesus. 15 He said to them, “You ·make yourselves look good [justify yourselves] in front of people, but God knows what is really in your hearts. What is ·important to [exalted/esteemed by] people is ·hateful [detestable; an abomination] in God’s sight.
16 “The law of Moses and the writings of the prophets [C the Old Testament] ·were preached [or were in force; L were] until John [C the Baptist] came [3:1–20; C John is the transitional figure between the age of promise and the age of salvation]. Since then the ·Good News [Gospel] about the kingdom of God is being ·told [preached; proclaimed], and everyone ·tries to enter it by force [or is eager to get into it; or is strongly urged to enter it]. 17 It would be easier for heaven and earth to ·pass away [disappear] than for ·the smallest part [L one stroke] of a letter in the law to ·be changed [drop out; Matt. 5:18; 11:12–13].
Divorce and Remarriage(A)
18 “If a man divorces his wife and marries another woman, he ·is guilty of [commits] adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman ·is also guilty of [commits] adultery.”
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 Jesus said, “There was a rich man who always dressed in ·the finest clothes [L purple and fine linen] and ·lived in luxury [or feasted sumptuously] every day. 20 And a very poor man named Lazarus, whose body was covered with sores, was laid at the rich man’s gate. 21 He ·wanted [longed] to eat ·only the small pieces of food that fell [L what fell] from the rich man’s table. ·And [Even] the dogs would come and lick his sores [C dogs were viewed as despicable scavengers, not household pets]. 22 ·Later [L Now it happened that], Lazarus died, and the angels carried him to ·the arms of Abraham [L Abraham’s side/T bosom; C the imagery of a banquet, with Abraham as host and Lazarus as honored guest]. Now he is comforted here, and you are ·suffering [in agony]. 26 Besides [L all this], there is a ·big pit [great gulf/chasm set in place] between you and us, so no one can cross over to you, and no one can leave there and come ·here [L to us].’ 27 The rich man said, ‘Father, then ·please [I ask/beg you to] send Lazarus to my father’s house. 28 [L For] I have five brothers, and Lazarus could warn them so that they will not come to this place of ·pain [torment].’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have ·the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets [L Moses and the prophets]; let them ·learn from [listen to] them.’ 30 The rich man said, ‘No, father Abraham! [L But] If someone goes to them from the dead, they would ·believe and change their hearts and lives [L repent].’ 31 But Abraham said to him, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not ·listen to [L be persuaded/convinced by] someone who comes back from the dead.’”

3 Kamrern tänkte för sig själv: 'Vad ska jag göra nu? Jag har blivit avskedad. Jag orkar inte gå ut och gräva diken, och jag skäms för att tigga.
4 Jo, jag vet vad jag ska göra! Och när jag är klar kommer jag att ha många vänner, som tar hand om mig när jag blir arbetslös.'
5-6 Därför inbjöd han alla som var skyldiga hans arbetsgivare pengar att komma och diskutera situationen. Han frågade den förste: 'Hur mycket är du skyldig honom?''Min skuld är hundra fat olivolja
7 'Och hur mycket är du skyldig honom?' frågade han en annan.'Hundra säckar vete
8 Den rike mannen var tvungen att beundra skojaren för att han var så slug. Och det är sant att de som hör till denna världen beter sig klokare mot varandra än vad de gudfruktiga gör.
9 Ja, det rådet ger jag er: Använd era materiella tillgångar till att skaffa er vänner, för när pengarna har förlorat sitt värde kan de ta emot er i himlen.
10 Bara den som är ärlig i det lilla kommer också att vara det i det stora. Och om man inte kan lita på er i småsaker, så kommer man aldrig att anförtro er det som är viktigt.
11 Om ni är opålitliga i fråga om jordisk rikedom, vem vill då anförtro er himmelrikets sanna rikedomar?
12 Och om ni inte är att lita på när det gäller andra människors pengar, hur ska Gud då kunna ge er det som tillhör er?
13 Varken ni eller någon annan kan tjäna två herrar. Ni kommer att vara lojala mot den ene och illojala mot den andre, eller ni kommer att se upp till den ene och se ner på den andre. Därför måste ni bestämma er. Man kan inte vara slav under pengar och samtidigt tjäna Gud.
14 När fariseerna hörde detta hånade de Jesus. De älskade nämligen pengar.
15 Då sa han till dem: Ni går omkring och ser förnäma och fromma ut när ni uppträder offentligt. Men Gud känner er och vet hur onda ni är, och han avskyr människor som försöker göra intryck.
16 Tills Johannes döparen började predika var Moses lag och profeternas budskap folkets vägvisare. Men så kom Johannes med de goda nyheterna att Guds rike stod för dörren. Och nu tränger ivriga människoskaror på för att komma in.
17 Men det betyder inte att lagen har förlorat sin kraft på en enda punkt. Tvärtom! Den är starkare och mer orubblig än himmel och jord.
18 Så en annan sak. Den som skiljer sig från sin hustru och lever tillsammans med någon annan gör sig skyldig till äktenskapsbrott. Men också den som gifter sig med en frånskild kvinna gör sig skyldig till äktenskapsbrott.
Den rike och den fattige
19 Det var en gång en rik man, sa Jesus, som var mycket välklädd och som var dag levde i stor lyx.
20 En dag kom en sjuk tiggare som hette Lasaros till hans dörr.
21 När han låg där och hoppades att han skulle få av resterna som blev över från den rike mannens bord kom hundarna och slickade hans öppna sår.
22 Slutligen dog tiggaren och fördes av änglarna till den plats där inget lidande mera finns. Den rike mannen dog också och blev begravd.
23 När han slog upp sina ögon var han i dödsriket, och han plågades svårt. Långt borta såg han Lasaros vid Abrahams sida.
24 'Fader Abraham
25 Men Abraham sa till honom: 'Min son , kom ihåg att du under din livstid hade allt du önskade dig medan Lasaros inte hade någonting. Nu är han här för att tröstas och du för att plågas.
26 Dessutom finns det en stor klyfta som skiljer oss åt. Ingen härifrån kan ta sig över till dig, och ingen kan heller komma över hit.'
27 Då sa den rike mannen: 'Fader Abraham, var snäll och skicka honom då
28 till mina fem bröder för att varna dem för detta helvete, så att de inte kommer hit när de dör.'
29 Men Abraham sa: 'Skriften har gång på gång varnat dem. Dina bröder kan lyssna till Mose och profeterna.'
30 Den rike mannen svarade: 'Nej, fader Abraham, det bryr de sig inte om. Men om någon kommer till dem från de döda, kommer de att ändra sig!'
31 Men Abraham sa: 'Om de inte vill lyssna till Mose och profeterna, så kommer de inte att lyssna ens om någon kommer tillbaka från de döda.'
