²² The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.^[a] The rich man also died and was buried.^{(A) 23} In Hades, where he was being tormented, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.^{[b](B) 24} He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’^(C)

⁷ and to give relief to the afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels^{(A) 8} in a fiery flame, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.^{(B) 9} These will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,^{(C) 10} when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

²⁷ but a fearful prospect of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.^(A)

⁹ And if your eye causes you to sin,^[a] tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into the hell^[b] of fire.^(A)

⁷ Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust,^[a] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.^(A)

⁴⁷ And if your eye causes you to sin,^[a] tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell,^{[b](A) 48} where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.^(B)

¹¹ And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image and for anyone who receives the brand of its name.”^(A)
