¹⁶ “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.^(A) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,^(B) and everyone is forcing their way into it.

⁹ Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?^(A) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ This is the one about whom it is written:

¹¹ Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,^[b] and violent people have been raiding it. ¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.^{(D) 14} And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.^(E)

³² For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,^(A) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors^(B) and the prostitutes^(C) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent^(D) and believe him.

²⁴ “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets^(A) who have spoken have foretold these days. ²⁵ And you are heirs^(B) of the prophets and of the covenant^(C) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’^[a](D)

² and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven^(A) has come near.”

³¹ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet?^(A) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is the one about whom it is written:

²⁸ I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God^(C) is greater than he.”

²⁹ (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.^(D)

¹⁸ But this is how God fulfilled^(A) what he had foretold^(B) through all the prophets,^(C) saying that his Messiah would suffer.^(D)

⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael^(A) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,^(B) and about whom the prophets also wrote^(C)—Jesus of Nazareth,^(D) the son of Joseph.”^(E)
