¹⁴ The Pharisees, who loved money,^(A) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.^(B)

³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.^(A) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”^(B)

⁴⁷ They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

² fixing our eyes on Jesus,^(A) the pioneer^(B) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,^(C) scorning its shame,^(D) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.^{(E) 3} Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary^(F) and lose heart.

³⁶ Some faced jeers and flogging,^(A) and even chains and imprisonment.^(B)

² People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,^(A) boastful, proud,^(B) abusive,^(C) disobedient to their parents,^(D) ungrateful, unholy,

¹⁵ Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”^(A)

⁵³ They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

¹³ “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!^(A) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.^(B)

³¹ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before^(A) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy^(B) for unjust gain.^(C)
