³¹ Then the father^[a] said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

⁴ They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;^(A)

²⁷ He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” ²⁸ But she answered him, “Sir,^[a] even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

Israel’s Rejection Is Not Final

11 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.^(A)

¹³ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?^{(A) 14} Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. ¹⁵ Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’^{[a](B) 16} So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”^[b](C)

²² He said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?^{(A) 23} Why, then, did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.’
