¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’

⁸ Come near to God and he will come near to you.^(A) Wash your hands,^(B) you sinners, and purify your hearts,^(C) you double-minded.^{(D) 9} Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.^{(E) 10} Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.^(F)

⁸ When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”^(A)

⁶ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.^(A)

⁶ So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. ⁷ That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.^(A)

²⁴ They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told^(A) how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. ²⁵ We are now in your hands.^(B) Do to us whatever seems good and right^(C) to you.”

¹⁰ I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness^(A) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff^(B) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.^(C)
