Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

14 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the [a]leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (A)they were watching Him [b]closely. And [c]there in front of Him was a man suffering from [d]edema. And Jesus responded and said to the [e](B)lawyers and [f]Pharisees, (C)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away. And He said to them, [g](D)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” (E)And they could offer no reply to this.

Parable of the Guests

Now He began telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (F)they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them, “Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (G)do not [h]take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him, and the one who invited you [i]both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then (H)in disgrace you will proceed to occupy the last place. 10 But whenever you are invited, go and [j]take the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, (I)move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are [k]dining at the table with you. 11 (J)For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Now He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your [l]repayment. 13 But whenever you give a [m]banquet, invite people who are poor, who have disabilities, who are limping, and people who are blind; 14 and you will be blessed, since they [n]do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at (K)the resurrection of the righteous.”

15 Now when one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “(L)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

Parable of the Dinner

16 But He said to him, (M)A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many; 17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is ready now.’ 18 And yet they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I purchased a field and I need to go out to look at it; [o]please consider me excused.’ 19 And another one said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; [p]please consider me excused.’ 20 And another one said, ‘(N)I took a woman as my wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’ 21 And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here those who are poor, those with disabilities, those who are blind, and those who are limping.’ 22 And later the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and the hedges and press upon them to come in, so that my house will be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my dinner.’”

Discipleship Tested

25 Now [q]large crowds were going along with Him, and He turned and said to them, 26 (O)If anyone comes to Me and does not [r]hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not (P)carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (Q)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who (R)does not [s]give up all his own possessions.

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but (S)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be [t]seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. (T)The one who has ears to hear, [u]let him hear.”

The Lost Sheep

15 Now all the (U)tax collectors and [v]sinners were coming near [w]Jesus to listen to Him. And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to complain, saying, “This man receives sinners and (V)eats with them.”

And so He told them this parable, saying, (W)What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the other ninety-nine in the [x]open pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

The Lost Coin

“Or what woman, if she has ten [y]silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy (X)in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Prodigal Son

11 And He said, “A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me (Y)the share of the estate that [z]is coming to me.’ And so he divided his [aa](Z)wealth between them. 13 And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his estate in [ab]wild living. 14 Now when he had [ac]spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began doing without. 15 So he went and [ad]hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he longed to have his fill of the carob pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving him anything. 17 But when he came to [ae]his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired laborers have more than enough bread, but I am dying here [af]from hunger! 18 I will set out and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and [ag]in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired laborers.”’ 20 So he set out and came to [ah]his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and [ai](AA)embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and [aj]in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out (AB)the best robe and put it on him, and [ak](AC)put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let’s eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was (AD)dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

25 “Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28 But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. 29 But he answered and said to his father, ‘Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never [al]neglected a command of yours; and yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; 30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your [am](AE)wealth with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you [an]have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was (AF)dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’”

The Unrighteous Manager

16 Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was [ao]reported to him as (AG)squandering his possessions. And he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What am I to do, since my [ap]master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to [aq]dig; I am ashamed to beg. I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’ And he summoned each one of his [ar]master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [as]jugs of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [at]kors of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ And his [au]master complimented the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of (AH)this age are more shrewd in relation to their own [av]kind than the (AI)sons of light. And I say to you, (AJ)make friends for yourselves by means of the [aw](AK)wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it [ax]is all gone, (AL)they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

10 (AM)The one who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little thing is also unrighteous in much. 11 Therefore if you have not [ay]been faithful in the use of unrighteous [az](AN)wealth, who will entrust the true wealth to you? 12 And if you have not [ba]been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13 (AO)No [bb]servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [bc](AP)wealth.”

14 Now the Pharisees, who were (AQ)lovers of money, were listening to all these things and (AR)were [bd]ridiculing Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are the ones who (AS)justify yourselves in the sight of people, but (AT)God knows your hearts; because that which is highly esteemed among people is detestable in the sight of God.

16 (AU)The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John came; since that time (AV)the gospel of the kingdom of God [be]has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17 (AW)But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [bf]stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.

18 (AX)Everyone who [bg]divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is [bh]divorced from a husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself in splendor every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus (AY)was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed from the scraps which fell from the rich man’s table; not only that, the dogs also were coming and licking his sores. 22 Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to [bi](AZ)Abraham’s arms; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in (BA)Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his [bj]arms. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘(BB)Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in (BC)this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that (BD)during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And [bk]besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set, so that those who want to go over from here to you will not be able, nor will any people cross over from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I request of you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may (BE)warn them, so that they will not come to this place of torment as well.’ 29 But Abraham *said, ‘They have [bl](BF)Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 But he said, ‘No, (BG)father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Instructions

17 Now He said to His disciples, (BH)It is inevitable that [bm]stumbling blocks come, but woe to one through whom they come! (BI)It is better for him if a millstone is hung around his neck and he [bn]is thrown into the sea, than that he may cause one of these little ones to [bo]sin. [bp]Be on your guard! (BJ)If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you (BK)seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

(BL)The apostles said to (BM)the Lord, “Increase our faith!” But (BN)the Lord said, “If you [bq]had faith [br]the size of (BO)a mustard seed, you could say to this (BP)mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would [bs]obey you.

“Now which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him after he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table to eat’? On the contrary, will he not say to him, ‘(BQ)Prepare something for me to eat, and properly [bt]clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and [bu]afterward you [bv]may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? 10 So you too, when you do all the things which were commanded you, say, ‘We are [bw]unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”

Ten Men with Leprosy Healed

11 While He was (BR)on the way to Jerusalem, (BS)He was passing [bx]between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as He entered a village, ten men with leprosy who (BT)stood at a distance met Him; 13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, (BU)Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When He saw them, He said to them, (BV)Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, (BW)glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a (BX)Samaritan. 17 But Jesus responded and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 [by]Was no one found who returned to (BY)give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; (BZ)your faith has [bz]made you well.”

Second Coming Foretold

20 Now He was questioned by the Pharisees (CA)as to when the kingdom of God was coming, and He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with [ca](CB)signs that can be observed; 21 nor will (CC)they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is [cb]in your midst.”

22 And He said to the disciples, (CD)The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (CE)And they will say to you, ‘Look there,’ or, ‘Look here!’ Do not leave, and do not run after them. 24 (CF)For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part [cc]of the sky, shines to the other part [cd]of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 25 (CG)But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 (CH)And just as it happened (CI)in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man: 27 people were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, and they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 [ce]It was the same as happened in (CJ)the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, and they were building; 29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and [cf]brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 It will be [cg]just the same on the day that the Son of Man (CK)is revealed. 31 On that day, the one who will be (CL)on the [ch]housetop, [ci]with his goods in the house, must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one in the field must not turn back. 32 (CM)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (CN)Whoever strives to [cj]save his [ck]life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (CO)There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left. 36 [[cl](CP)Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”] 37 And responding, they *said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, (CQ)Where the body is, there also the [cm]vultures will be gathered.”

Parables on Prayer

18 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they (CR)ought to pray and not (CS)become discouraged, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not (CT)respect any person. Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my [cn]opponent.’ For a while he was unwilling; but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor (CU)respect any person, yet (CV)because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice; otherwise [co]by continually coming she will (CW)wear me out.’” And (CX)the Lord said, “Listen to what the unrighteous judge *said; now, will God not (CY)bring about justice for His (CZ)elect who cry out to Him day [cp]and night, and will He (DA)delay long for them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, (DB)will He find [cq]faith on the earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Now He also told this parable to some people who (DC)trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and (DD)viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men (DE)went up into the [cr]temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (DF)stood and began praying this in regard to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I (DG)fast twice a week; I (DH)pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (DI)standing some distance away, (DJ)was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but (DK)was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be [cs]merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; (DL)for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

15 (DM)Now they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. 16 But Jesus called for [ct]the little ones, saying, “Allow the children to come to Me, and do not [cu]forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I say to you, (DN)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

The Rich Young Ruler

18 (DO)A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me [cv]good? No one is [cw]good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘(DP)Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these things I have kept since my youth.” 22 Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; (DQ)sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have (DR)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy. 24 And Jesus looked at him and said, (DS)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For (DT)it is easier for a camel to [cx]go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!” 26 Those who heard Him said, “And so who can be saved?” 27 But He said, (DU)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

28 Peter said, “Behold, (DV)we have left [cy]our own homes and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, (DW)there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in (DX)the age to come, eternal life.”

31 (DY)Now He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, (DZ)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (EA)all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 (EB)For He will be [cz]handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon, 33 and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” 34 [da](EC)The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight

35 (ED)Now as [db](EE)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging. 36 But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, “Jesus, (EF)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “(EG)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him, 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Regain your sight; (EH)your faith has [dc]made you well.” 43 And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (EI)glorifying God; and when (EJ)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

Zaccheus Converted

19 Jesus (EK)entered Jericho and was passing through. And [dd]there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable due to the crowd, because he was short in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up a [de](EL)sycamore tree in order to see Him, because He was about to pass through that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down, and received Him [df]joyfully. When the people saw this, they all began to complain, saying, “He has gone in [dg]to be the guest of a man who is a sinner!” But Zaccheus stopped and said to (EM)the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have (EN)extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back (EO)four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is (EP)a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Parable of the Ten Minas

11 Now while they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because (EQ)He was near Jerusalem and they thought that (ER)the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, (ES)A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return. 13 And he called ten of his own slaves and gave them ten [dh]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business with this money [di]until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be summoned to him so that he would learn how much they had made by the business they had done. 16 The first slave appeared, saying, ‘[dj]Master, your [dk]mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave; since you have been (ET)faithful in a very little thing, you are to have authority over ten cities.’ 18 The second one came, saying, ‘Your [dl]mina, [dm]master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 And then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept tucked away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He *said to him, ‘[dn]From your own lips I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am a demanding man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 And so why did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came back, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24 And then he said to the other slaves who were present, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he already has ten minas.’ 26 (EU)I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27 But as for (EV)these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (EW)slaughter them in my presence.’”

Triumphal Entry

28 After Jesus said these things, He (EX)was going on ahead, (EY)going up to Jerusalem.

29 (EZ)When He approached Bethphage and (FA)Bethany, near the [do]mountain that is called (FB)Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village [dp]ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘[dq]The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its [dr]owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “[ds]The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, (FC)and they threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of (FD)the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to (FE)praise God [dt]joyfully with a loud voice for all the [du]miracles which they had seen, 38 [dv]shouting:

(FF)Blessed is the (FG)King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and (FH)glory in the highest!”

39 (FI)And yet some of the Pharisees [dw]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” 40 Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, (FJ)the stones will cry out!”

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and (FK)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you [dx]when your enemies will (FL)put up a [dy]barricade against you, and (FM)surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and (FN)they will not leave in you one stone upon [dz]another, because you did not recognize (FO)the time of your visitation.”

Traders Driven from the Temple

45 (FP)And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘(FQ)And My house will be a house of prayer,’ (FR)but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And (FS)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (FT)were trying to put Him to death, 48 and yet they could not find [ea]anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to [eb]every word He said.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

20 (FU)On one of the days while (FV)He was teaching the people in the temple and (FW)preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders (FX)confronted Him, and they declared, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” But He replied to them, “I will also ask you a [ec]question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a (FY)prophet.” And so they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vine-growers

(FZ)But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to [ed]vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out. 13 Now the [ee]owner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will (GA)respect him.’ 14 But when the vine-growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the [ef]owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and (GB)put these vine-growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said, “(GC)May it never happen!” 17 But [eg]Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what is this statement that has been written:

(GD)A stone which the builders rejected,
This has become (GE)the [eh]chief cornerstone’?

18 (GF)Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests (GG)tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them. 20 (GH)And so they watched Him [ei]closely, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order (GI)that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could hand Him over to the jurisdiction and authority of (GJ)the governor. 21 And the spies questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [ej]are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God on the basis of truth. 22 Is it [ek]permissible for us (GK)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He saw through their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [el]denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, “Then (GL)pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to (GM)catch Him in a statement in the presence of the people; and they were amazed at His answer, and said nothing.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 (GN)Now some of the (GO)Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him, 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (GP)if [em]a man’s brother dies, [en]leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to [eo]marry the wife and raise up children [ep]for his brother. 29 So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third [eq]married her; and in the same way [er]all seven [es]died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, [et]which one’s wife does the woman become? For [eu]all seven [ev]married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of (GQ)this age marry and the women are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (GR)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are (GS)sons of God, being [ew]sons of the resurrection. 37 But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in (GT)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (GU)the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 (GV)Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for (GW)all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For (GX)they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (GY)But He said to them, “How is it that they say the [ex]Christ is (GZ)David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

(HA)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43 (HB)Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”

45 (HC)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, (HD)who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who [ey]devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

The Widow’s Gift

21 (HE)Now He looked up and saw the wealthy putting their gifts into the temple treasury. And He saw a poor widow putting [ez]in (HF)two [fa]lepta coins. And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all [fb]contributed to the [fc]offering from their [fd]surplus; but she, from her poverty, put in all [fe]that she had (HG)to live on.”

(HH)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and [ff]vowed gifts, He said, As for these things which you are observing, the days will come when (HI)there will not be left one stone upon [fg]another, which will not be torn down.”

They asked Him questions, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the [fh]sign when these things are about to take place?” And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘(HJ)I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ (HK)Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.”

Things to Come

10 Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, 11 and there will be [fi]massive earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrible sights and great [fj]signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, (HL)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, [fk]bringing you before kings and governors on account of My name. 13 (HM)It will lead to [fl]an opportunity for your testimony. 14 (HN)So [fm]make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for (HO)I will provide you [fn]eloquence and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to oppose or refute. 16 But you will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be hated by all people because of My name. 18 And yet (HP)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 (HQ)By your endurance you will gain your [fo]lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem (HR)surrounded by armies, then [fp]recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are inside [fq]the city must leave, and (HS)those who are in the country must not enter [fr]the city; 22 because these are (HT)days of punishment, so that all things which have been written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for (HU)there will be great distress upon the [fs]land, and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by (HV)the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and (HW)Jerusalem will be (HX)trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until (HY)the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Return of Christ

25 “There will be [ft]signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting from fear and the expectation of the things that are coming upon the [fu]world; for the powers of [fv]the heavens will be shaken. 27 And (HZ)then they will see (IA)the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (IB)your redemption is drawing near.”

29 And He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees: 30 as soon as they put forth leaves, you see for yourselves and (IC)know that summer is now near. 31 So you too, when you see these things happening, [fw]recognize that (ID)the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33 (IE)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 “But (IF)be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that [fx]this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. 36 But (IG)stay alert at all times, praying that you will have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to (IH)stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Now [fy]during the day He was (II)teaching in the temple, but [fz](IJ)at evening He would go out and spend the night on (IK)the [ga]mountain that is called [gb]Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up (IL)very early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath

14 Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (A)“Is it lawful to heal on the [a]Sabbath?”

But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. Then He answered them, saying, (B)“Which of you, having a [b]donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

Take the Lowly Place

So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 (C)But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 (D)For whoever exalts himself will be [c]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite (E)the poor, the [d]maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 And you will be (F)blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

The Parable of the Great Supper(G)

15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, (H)“Blessed is he who shall eat [e]bread in the kingdom of God!”

16 (I)Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and (J)sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ 20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the [f]maimed and the lame and the blind.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ 23 Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you (K)that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’ ”

Leaving All to Follow Christ(L)

25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 (M)“If anyone comes to Me (N)and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, (O)yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And (P)whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For (Q)which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you (R)does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Tasteless Salt Is Worthless(S)

34 (T)“Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land nor for the [g]dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep(U)

15 Then (V)all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man [h]receives sinners (W)and eats with them.” So He spoke this parable to them, saying:

(X)“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, (Y)‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep (Z)which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (AA)than over ninety-nine [i]just persons who (AB)need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or what woman, having ten silver [j]coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them (AC)his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with [k]prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the [l]pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, (AD)I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

20 “And he arose and came to his father. But (AE)when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven (AF)and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, [m]‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 (AG)for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’

28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’

31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, (AH)for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”

The Parable of the Unjust Steward

16 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was [n]wasting his goods. So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an (AI)account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

“Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’

“So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [o]measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred [p]measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than (AJ)the sons of light.

“And I say to you, (AK)make friends for yourselves by unrighteous [q]mammon, that when [r]you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 (AL)He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your (AM)own?

13 (AN)“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The Law, the Prophets, and the Kingdom

14 Now the Pharisees, (AO)who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they [s]derided Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who (AP)justify yourselves (AQ)before men, but (AR)God knows your hearts. For (AS)what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 (AT)“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. 17 (AU)And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [t]tittle of the law to fail.

18 (AV)“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and [u]fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with [v]the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to (AW)Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and (AX)cool my tongue; for I (AY)am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, (AZ)remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, (BA)‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, (BB)‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, (BC)neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

Jesus Warns of Offenses(BD)

17 Then He said to the disciples, (BE)“It is impossible that no [w]offenses should come, but (BF)woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should [x]offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves. (BG)If your brother sins [y]against you, (BH)rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns [z]to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

Faith and Duty(BI)

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

(BJ)So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself (BK)and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded [aa]him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are (BL)unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ ”

Ten Lepers Cleansed

11 Now it happened (BM)as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, (BN)who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 So when He saw them, He said to them, (BO)“Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice (BP)glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a (BQ)Samaritan.

17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 (BR)And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

The Coming of the Kingdom(BS)

20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 (BT)nor will they say, [ab]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, (BU)the kingdom of God is [ac]within you.”

22 Then He said to the disciples, (BV)“The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (BW)And they will say to you, [ad]‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24 (BX)For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 (BY)But first He must suffer many things and be (BZ)rejected by this generation. 26 (CA)And as it (CB)was in the (CC)days of (CD)Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the (CE)day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and (CF)destroyed them all. 28 (CG)Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on (CH)the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man (CI)is revealed.

31 “In that day, he (CJ)who is on the housetop, and his [ae]goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 (CK)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (CL)Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 (CM)I tell you, in that night there will be two [af]men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (CN)Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 [ag]Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

37 And they answered and said to Him, (CO)“Where, Lord?”

So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men (CP)always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [ah]regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [ai]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, (CQ)yet because this widow troubles me I will [aj]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”

Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And (CR)shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you (CS)that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Also He spoke this parable to some (CT)who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (CU)stood and prayed thus with himself, (CV)‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; (CW)for everyone who exalts himself will be [ak]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children(CX)

15 (CY)Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (CZ)of such is the kingdom of God. 17 (DA)Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(DB)

18 (DC)Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but (DD)One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: (DE)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ (DF)‘Honor your father and your mother.’

21 And he said, “All (DG)these things I have kept from my youth.”

22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. (DH)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

With God All Things Are Possible(DI)

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, (DJ)“How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

27 But He said, (DK)“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

28 (DL)Then Peter said, “See, we have left [al]all and followed You.”

29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, (DM)there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 (DN)who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(DO)

31 (DP)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things (DQ)that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be [am]accomplished. 32 For (DR)He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

34 (DS)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

A Blind Man Receives His Sight(DT)

35 (DU)Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. 36 And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, (DV)Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, 41 saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; (DW)your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, (DX)glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House

19 Then Jesus entered and passed through (DY)Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to (DZ)see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up [an]and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, [ao]make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he [ap]made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all [aq]complained, saying, (EA)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the (EB)poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by (EC)false accusation, (ED)I restore fourfold.”

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because (EE)he also is (EF)a son of Abraham; 10 (EG)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

The Parable of the Minas(EH)

11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because (EI)they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. 12 (EJ)Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten [ar]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ 14 (EK)But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, (EL)‘Well done, good servant; because you were (EM)faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 (EN)For I feared you, because you are [as]an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 And he said to him, (EO)‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. (EP)You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) 26 ‘For I say to you, (EQ)that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

The Triumphal Entry(ER)

28 When He had said this, (ES)He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 (ET)And it came to pass, when He drew near to [at]Bethphage and (EU)Bethany, at the mountain called (EV)Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just (EW)as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”

34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. (EX)And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to (EY)rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:

(EZ)‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’
(FA)Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, (FB)the stones would immediately cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and (FC)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this (FD)your day, the things that (FE)make for your (FF)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will (FG)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 (FH)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and (FI)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, (FJ)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(FK)

45 (FL)Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who [au]bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (FM)‘My house [av]is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a (FN)‘den of thieves.’

47 And He (FO)was teaching daily in the temple. But (FP)the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to (FQ)hear Him.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(FR)

20 Now (FS)it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, (FT)by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”

But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: The (FU)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why [aw]then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, (FV)for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers(FW)

Then He began to tell the people this parable: (FX)“A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to [ax]vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at [ay]vintage-time he (FY)sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the (FZ)heir. Come, (GA)let us kill him, that the inheritance may be (GB)ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and (GC)killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to (GD)others.”

And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:

(GE)‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be (GF)broken; but (GG)on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they [az]feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(GH)

20 (GI)So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

21 Then they asked Him, saying, (GJ)“Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, [ba]“Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”

They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”

25 And He said to them, (GK)“Render[bb] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(GL)

27 (GM)Then some of the Sadducees, (GN)who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second [bc]took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven [bd]also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”

34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are (GO)counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for (GP)they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, (GQ)being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord (GR)‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for (GS)all live to Him.”

39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(GT)

41 And He said to them, (GU)“How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:

(GV)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; (GW)how is He then his Son?”

Beware of the Scribes(GX)

45 (GY)Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 (GZ)“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, (HA)love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 (HB)who devour widows’ houses, and for a (HC)pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Two Mites(HD)

21 And He looked up (HE)and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain (HF)poor widow putting in two (HG)mites.[be] So He said, “Truly I say to you (HH)that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings [bf]for God, but she out of her poverty put in (HI)all the livelihood that she had.”

Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple(HJ)

(HK)Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was [bg]adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, “These things which you see—the days will come in which (HL)not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age(HM)

So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”

And He said: (HN)“Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ [bh]Therefore do not [bi]go after them. But when you hear of (HO)wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.”

10 (HP)Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 And there will be great (HQ)earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. 12 (HR)But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and (HS)prisons. (HT)You will be brought before kings and rulers (HU)for My name’s sake. 13 But (HV)it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14 (HW)Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will [bj]answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom (HX)which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or [bk]resist. 16 (HY)You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put (HZ)some of you to death. 17 And (IA)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. 18 (IB)But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19 By your patience possess your souls.

The Destruction of Jerusalem(IC)

20 (ID)“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that (IE)all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 (IF)But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles (IG)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man(IH)

25 (II)“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, (IJ)for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man (IK)coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because (IL)your redemption draws near.”

The Parable of the Fig Tree(IM)

29 (IN)Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 (IO)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My (IP)words will by no means pass away.

The Importance of Watching(IQ)

34 “But (IR)take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with [bl]carousing, drunkenness, and (IS)cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For (IT)it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 (IU)Watch therefore, and (IV)pray always that you may [bm]be counted (IW)worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and (IX)to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 (IY)And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but (IZ)at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. 38 Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.
