¹⁴ Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,^(A) the synagogue leader^(B) said to the people, “There are six days for work.^(C) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

² When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”^(A)

¹⁴ Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.^{(A) 15} Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.^(B) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”^(C)

But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”^(D) So they were divided.^(E)

¹⁵ The man went away and told the Jewish leaders^(A) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

¹⁶ So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.

⁷ The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely^(A) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.^(B)

³ Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,^(A) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”^{(B) 4} But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

⁵ Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child^[a] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”^{(C) 6} And they had nothing to say.

⁴¹ Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,^(A) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house

²² Then one of the synagogue leaders,^(A) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
