⁵⁶ Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?^(A)

³ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.^[a](A)

³² “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. ³³ Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it^[a] is near, right at the door.^(A)

⁴² and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.^{(A) 44} They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.^(B) They will not leave one stone on another,^(C) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming^(D) to you.”

²⁴ “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets^(A) who have spoken have foretold these days. ²⁵ And you are heirs^(B) of the prophets and of the covenant^(C) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’^{[a](D) 26} When God raised up^(E) his servant, he sent him first^(F) to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

The Father Revealed in the Son^(A)

²⁵ At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,^(B) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.^(C)

² But for you who revere my name,^(A) the sun of righteousness^(B) will rise with healing^(C) in its rays. And you will go out and frolic^(D) like well-fed calves.

3 “I will send my messenger,^(A) who will prepare the way before me.^(B) Then suddenly the Lord^(C) you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant,^(D) whom you desire,^(E) will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

⁷ I will shake all nations, and what is desired^(A) by all nations will come, and I will fill this house^(B) with glory,^(C)’ says the Lord Almighty.
