⁵² From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three;

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium

14 The same thing occurred in Iconium, where Paul^[a] and Barnabas^[b] went into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers. ² But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. ³ So they remained for a long time speaking boldly for the Lord, who testified to the word of his grace by granting signs and wonders to be done through them.^{(A) 4} But the residents of the city were divided: some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.^(B)

²⁴ Some were convinced by what he had said, while others refused to believe.

The World’s Hatred

¹⁸ “If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.^{(A) 19} If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘Slaves are not greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.^{(B) 21} But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.^(C)

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided.^(A)

⁴³ When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.^(A)

⁴⁴ The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.^{[a] 45} But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and blaspheming, they contradicted what was spoken by Paul.^{(B) 46} Then both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you reject it and judge yourselves to be unworthy of eternal life, we are now turning to the gentiles.^(C)

² They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.^(A)

¹⁹ Again the Jews were divided because of these words.^{(A) 20} Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is out of his mind. Why listen to him?”^{(B) 21} Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”^(C)

⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Messiah.”^[a] But some asked, “Surely the Messiah^[b] does not come from Galilee, does he?^{(A) 42} Has not the scripture said that the Messiah^[c] is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”^{(B) 43} So there was a division in the crowd because of him.
