⁴⁰ You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”^(A)

⁶ So, then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober,^(A)

¹³ Keep awake, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.^[a](A)

¹² waiting for and hastening^[a] the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and destroyed and the elements will melt with fire? ¹³ But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.^(A)

Final Exhortation and Doxology

¹⁴ Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish,^(B)

¹⁴ Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.^(A)

An Urgent Appeal

¹¹ Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is already the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;^(A)

⁴⁴ Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.^(A)

⁴² Keep awake, therefore, for you do not know on what day^[a] your Lord is coming.^(A)

³³ Beware, keep alert,^[a] for you do not know when the time will come.^{(A) 34} It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.^{(B) 35} Therefore, keep awake, for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening or at midnight or at cockcrow or at dawn,^{(C) 36} or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly.
