45 One of the experts in the law(A) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

46 Then he said, “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens(B) that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.(C)

47 “Woe to you! You build tombs[a] for the prophets,(D) and your fathers killed(E) them. 48 Therefore, you are witnesses(F) that you approve[b](G) the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[c] 49 Because of this, the wisdom of God(H) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles,(I) and some of them they will kill and persecute,’(J) 50 so that this generation(K) may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world[d](L) 51 from the blood of Abel(M) to the blood of Zechariah,(N) who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

“Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.[e]

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge.(O) You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered(P) those who were trying to go in.”

53 When he left there,[f] the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose(Q) him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things; 54 they were lying in wait(R) for him to trap him in something he said.[g](S)

Bildad Speaks

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:

How long until you stop talking?
Show some sense, and then we can talk.
Why are we regarded as cattle,
as stupid in your sight?
You who tear yourself in anger[a]
should the earth be abandoned on your account,
or a rock be removed from its place?

Yes, the light(B) of the wicked(C) is extinguished;
the flame of his fire does not glow.
The light in his tent grows dark,(D)
and the lamp beside him is put out.

His powerful stride is shortened,
and his own schemes trip him up.(E)
For his own feet lead him into a net,
and he strays into its mesh.
A trap catches him by the heel;
a noose seizes him.
10 A rope lies hidden for him on the ground,
and a snare waits for him along the path.
11 Terrors frighten him on every side(F)
and harass him at every step.
12 His strength is depleted;
disaster lies ready for him to stumble.[b]

13 Parts of his skin are eaten away;
death’s firstborn consumes his limbs.
14 He is ripped from the security of his tent
and marched away to the king of terrors.
15 Nothing he owned remains in his tent.
Burning sulfur(G) is scattered over his home.
16 His roots below dry up,
and his branches above wither away.(H)
17 All memory(I) of him perishes from the earth;
he has no name anywhere.[c]
18 He is driven from light to darkness
and chased from the inhabited world.
19 He has no children or descendants among his people,
no survivor where he used to live.(J)
20 Those in the west are appalled(K) at his fate,
while those in the east tremble in horror.

21 Indeed, such is the dwelling of the unjust man,
and this is the place of the one who does not know God.(L)

For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh,(A) but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit. Now the mindset of the flesh(B) is death,(C) but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace. The mindset of the flesh is hostile(D) to God because it does not submit to God’s law. Indeed, it is unable to do so. Those who are in the flesh(E) cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(F) If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(G) he does not belong to him. 10 Now if Christ is in you,(H) the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit[a] gives life[b] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(I) lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through[c] his Spirit who lives in you.
