Luke Writes About Jesus’ Life
1 Many have ·tried to report on [set out to compile an account/narrative of] the things that ·happened [have been fulfilled/accomplished] among us [John 20:31; Acts 1:1–3; 2 Pet. 1:16–19]. 2 They have written the same things that ·we learned from [L were handed down by] others—the ·people who saw those things [L eyewitnesses] from the beginning and ·served God by telling people his message [L were servants of the word; Acts 10:39–41; 1 John 1:1–3]. 3 Since I myself have ·studied [investigated; followed closely] everything carefully from the beginning, most excellent [C a designation for someone with high social or political status] Theophilus, it seemed ·good [fitting] for me to write it out for you. I arranged it ·in order [or in an orderly manner], 4 to help you know that what you have been taught is ·true [certain; reliable; John 20:31].
Zechariah and Elizabeth
5 During the time ·Herod ruled Judea [L of Herod, king of Judea], there was a priest named Zechariah who belonged to ·Abijah’s group [the priestly division/order of Abijah; C priests were divided into twenty-four divisions; 2 Chr. 31:2]. Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, came from the ·family [L daughters; C female descendants] of Aaron [C brother of Moses and first high priest of Israel; for a priest like Zechariah to marry a woman of priestly ancestry was a special blessing]. 6 [L Both] Zechariah and Elizabeth ·truly did what God said was good [L were righteous before God]. They ·did [followed; walked in] everything the Lord commanded and were ·without fault [blameless] in keeping his ·law [regulations; requirements]. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth ·could not have a baby [could not conceive; T was barren], and both of them were very old [Gen. 17:17; 18:11].
8 One day Zechariah was serving as a priest before God, because his ·group [order; division] was on duty. 9 According to the custom of the ·priests [L priesthood], he was chosen by lot [C similar to dice; used to determine God’s will] to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense [1 Chr. 6:49; Heb. 9:6]. 10 ·There were a great many people [L The whole multitude of the people were] outside praying at the ·time [L hour] the incense was offered. 11 Then an angel ·of [sent by] the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing on the right side of the incense ·table [altar]. 12 When he saw the angel, Zechariah was ·startled [shaken] and frightened. 13 But the angel said to him, “Zechariah, don’t be afraid. God has heard your ·prayer [petition]. Your wife, Elizabeth, will ·give birth to [bear for you] a son, and you will name him John. 14 He will bring you joy and ·gladness [delight], and many people will ·be happy [rejoice] because of his birth. 15 [L For; Because] John will be a great man ·for [in the eyes of; L before] the Lord. He will never drink wine or beer [C indicating he will be set apart to God for special service; Num. 6:3], and even ·from birth [or in his mother’s womb; 1:41, 44], he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. 16 He will help many ·people [L of the children] of Israel return to the Lord their God [1 Kin. 18:37]. 17 He will go before ·the Lord [L him] in [the] spirit and power ·like [of] Elijah. He will ·make peace between parents and [L turn the hearts of parents/fathers back to] their children and will bring those who are not obeying God back to the ·right way of thinking [or wisdom of the righteous], ·to make a people ready [L to prepare a people who are fit/ready] for the ·coming of the Lord [L Lord; Mal. 4:5–6].”
18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I know ·that what you say is true [L this]? [L For] I am an old man, and my wife is old, too [Gen. 17:17].”
19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel [C one of two named angels in Scripture (the other is Michael); Dan. 8:16; 9:21; 10:10–14]. I stand before God, who sent me to talk to you and to tell you this good news. 20 Now, ·listen [L look; T behold]! You will [L be silent and] not be able to speak until the day these things happen, because you did not believe ·what I told you [L my words]. ·But they will really happen [L …which will be fulfilled at their appointed time].”
21 Outside, the people were still waiting for Zechariah and were ·surprised that [wondering why] he was ·staying so long [delayed] in the Temple. 22 When Zechariah came outside, he could not speak to them, and they knew he had seen a vision in the Temple. He could only ·make signs [motion; gesture] to them and remained unable to speak. 23 When his ·time [period; L days] of service at the Temple was finished, he went home.
24 ·Later [L After these days], Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and ·did not go out of her house [went into seclusion; L hid herself; C the reason is unknown, perhaps for quiet worship or to avoid gawking neighbors] for five months. Elizabeth said, 25 “·Look what [This is what; L Thus] the Lord has done for me! He has [L watched over me and] taken away my disgrace among the people [C the Jewish people thought it was a disgrace for a woman not to have children; Gen. 30:23].”
An Angel Appears to Mary
26 During Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel [1:19] to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin. She was ·engaged to marry [pledged to; C engagement was a binding contract between two families and could only be broken by divorce] a man named Joseph ·from the family [a descendent; L from the house] of David. ·Her [L The virgin’s] name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “·Greetings [Hello; L Rejoice; C a common greeting]! ·The Lord has blessed you and is with you [or …favored one, the Lord is with you].”
29 But Mary was ·very startled [disturbed; perplexed; troubled] by what the angel said and wondered what ·this greeting might mean [sort of greeting this was].
30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; [L for; because] ·God has shown you his grace [L you have found favor/grace with God]. 31 ·Listen [L Look; T Behold]! You will ·become pregnant [L conceive in your womb] and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus [Is. 7:14]. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of ·King David, his ancestor [L his father David]. 33 He will ·rule [reign] over the ·people [L house] of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end [2 Sam. 7:13, 16; Dan. 7:14, 27].”
34 Mary said to the angel, “How ·will [can] this happen since ·I am a virgin [L I have not known a man (sexually)]?”
35 The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come ·upon [over] you, and the power of the Most High will ·cover [overshadow] you. For this reason the ·baby will be holy and [holy one to be born] will be called the Son of God. 36 ·Now [L And look/T behold] Elizabeth, your relative, ·is also pregnant with [has also conceived] a son ·though she is very old [in her old age]. ·Everyone thought she could not have a baby, but she has been pregnant for six months. [L And this is the sixth month for the woman they called barren!] 37 ·God can do anything […because nothing is impossible with God; or …because no word/message from God will ever fail; Gen. 18:14; Jer. 32:17]!”
38 Mary said, “[L Look; T Behold] I am the ·servant [bondservant; T handmaid] of the Lord. Let this happen to me ·as you say [according to your word]!” Then the angel ·went away [left her].
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 [L In those days] Mary got up and went quickly to a town in the hills of Judea [C from Galilee in the north to southern Israel, about three or four days journey by foot]. 40 She ·came to [entered] Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the unborn baby ·inside her [in her womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked], and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She cried out in a loud voice, “·God has blessed you [L You are blessed] ·more than any other woman [L among women], and ·he has blessed the baby to which you will give birth [L blessed is the fruit of your womb]. 43 [L But] Why ·has this good thing happened to me [am I so honored], that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 [L For look/T behold] When I heard ·your voice [L the sound of your greeting], the baby inside ·me [my womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked] with joy. 45 ·You are blessed because you [L Blessed is she who has] believed that what the Lord said would ·really happen [be fulfilled].”
Mary Praises God
46 Then Mary said,
“My soul ·praises [exalts; glorifies; magnifies] the Lord [1 Sam. 2:1–10];
47 my ·heart [spirit] rejoices in God my Savior [Ps. 35:9],
48 because he has ·shown his concern for [noticed; looked favorably on] his ·humble [lowly] servant girl [1 Sam. 1:11].
[L For look/T behold] From now on, all ·people [L generations] will ·say that I am [call me] blessed [Ps. 138:6],
49 because the ·Powerful [Mighty] One has done great things for me.
His name is holy.
50 ·God will show his mercy [L His mercy is/continues] ·forever and ever [L to generations and generations]
to those who ·worship and serve [L fear; reverence] him [Ps. 103:17].
51 He has done mighty deeds ·by his power [L with his arm; C a metaphor for strength].
He has scattered the people who are proud
·and think great things about themselves [or in the schemes they devise; L in the thoughts/intentions of their hearts].
52 He has brought down ·rulers [the powerful] from their thrones
and ·raised up [exalted] the ·humble [lowly].
53 He has filled the hungry with good things [Ps. 107:9]
and sent the rich away ·with nothing [empty-handed].
54 He has helped his servant, the people of Israel,
·remembering to show them [mindful of his] mercy
55 as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his ·children [descendants; L seed] forever [Gen. 17:7, 19].”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a ·boy [L son]. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard how ·good [greatly merciful] the Lord was to her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 When the baby was eight days old, they came to circumcise him [Gen. 17:12]. They ·wanted [were about] to name him Zechariah because this was his father’s name, 60 but his mother said, “No! He will be named John.”
61 The people said to Elizabeth, “But no one in your family has this name.” 62 Then they made ·signs [gestures; motions] to his father to find out what he would like to name him [C indicating that Zechariah was not only mute but also deaf].
63 Zechariah ·asked [motioned] for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John,” and everyone ·was surprised [marveled; was amazed]. 64 Immediately ·Zechariah could talk again [L his mouth was opened and his tongue freed], and he began ·praising [blessing] God. 65 All their neighbors ·became alarmed [were afraid/in awe], and in all the ·mountains [hill country] of Judea people continued talking about all these things. 66 The people who heard about them ·wondered [L kept/pondered them in their hearts], saying, “What will this child [turn out to] be?” because the [L hand of the; C a metaphor for empowering presence] Lord was with him.
Zechariah Praises God
67 Then Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “·Let us praise [L Blessed be] the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has ·come to help his people and has given them freedom [L visited and accomplished redemption for his people].
69 He has ·given us a powerful Savior [L raised up a horn of salvation for us; C referring to the horn of a powerful animal—a metaphor for strength; 1 Sam. 2:1, 10; Ps. 132:17; Ezek. 29:21]
·from the family [L in the house] of God’s servant David.
70 [L …just as] He said that he would do this
through [L the mouth of] his holy prophets who lived long ago:
71 He promised he would save us from our enemies
and from the ·power [L hand; C indicating controlling power or oppression] of all those who hate us.
72 He said he would give mercy to our ·ancestors [forefathers]
and that he would remember his holy ·promise [covenant].
73 ·God promised [L The oath that he swore to] Abraham, our father [Gen. 22:16–18],
74 that he would ·save [rescue] us from the ·power [hand; v. 71] of our enemies
so we could serve him without fear,
75 being holy and ·good [righteous] before God as long as we live.
76 “Now you, child, will be called ·a [or the] prophet of the Most High God.
[L For] You will go before the Lord to prepare his ·way [or paths; Mal. 3:1].
77 You will ·make his people know that they will be saved [L give his people the knowledge of salvation]
by having their sins forgiven [Jer. 31:34].
78 ·With [or Because of] the ·loving [tender] mercy of our God,
·a new day from heaven will dawn upon us [L the sunrise/dawn from heaven will visit us; C a metaphor for the Messiah; Mal. 4:2].
79 It will shine on those who ·live [dwell; sit] in darkness,
in the shadow of death [Is. 9:2].
It will guide ·us [L our feet] into the path of peace [Is. 59:8].”
80 And so the child grew up and became strong ·in spirit [or in the Spirit]. John lived in the ·desert [wilderness] until the time when he ·came out to preach [appeared; was revealed] to Israel.

5 בימי הורדוס מלך יהודה היה בארץ כהן בשם זכריה, אשר היה שייך למחלקת אביה[a] – ממשרתי בית-המקדש. גם אשתו אלישבע הייתה ממשפחה כוהנית. 6 זכריה ואלישבע היו אנשים צדיקים , אשר אהבו את ה' ושמרו את כל מצוותיו וחוקותיו. 7 אולם לא היו להם ילדים, כי אלישבע הייתה עקרה, ושניהם כבר היו זקנים.
11 לפתע נראה מלאך ה' אל זכריה מימין למזבח הקטורת. 12 זכריה נבהל ונמלא פחד.
13 "אל תירא, זכריה," הרגיע אותו המלאך. "באתי לבשר לך שאלוהים שמע את תפילתך, ושאשתך אלישבע תלד לך בן! עליך לקרוא לו 'יוחנן'. 14 לידתו תביא לכם שמחה ואושר, ואנשים רבים ישמחו יחד אתכם, 15 כי ה' הועיד אותו לגדולות. עליו להינזר מיין ומשקאות חריפים, והוא יימלא ברוח הקודש מעת לידתו. 16 יוחנן ישיב רבים מעם ישראל אל ה' אלוהיהם. 17 הוא ילך לפני ה' ברוחו ובגבורתו של אליהו הנביא, ישלים בין אבות לבנים, וישיב את המרדנים לדרך הצדקה והתבונה. אכן, הוא יכין את העם לבואו של האדון." 18 "כיצד אדע שדבריך נכונים"?" שאל זכריה. "הלא אדם זקן אני, וגם אשתי כבר זקנה."

30 "אל תפחדי, מרים," הרגיע אותה המלאך, "כי מצאת חן בעיני אלוהים והוא החליט לברך אותך. 31 בעוד זמן קצר תיכנסי להריון ותלדי בן. בשם 'ישוע' תקראי לו. 32 הוא יהיה רם-מעלה וייקרא בן-אלוהים. ה' ייתן לו את כסא דוד אביו, 33 והוא ימלוך על עם-ישראל לעולם ועד; מלכותו לא תסתיים לעולם." 34 "כיצד אוכל ללדת?" שאלה מרים בתמיהה. 38 "הנני שפחתך, אדוני," אמרה מרים בענווה, "ואני מוכנה לעשות את כל אשר יאמר לי. אמן שיתקיימו דבריך." לאחר מכן נעלם המלאך.
42 "ברוכה את בנשים, מרים, וברוך תינוקך!" פרצה אלישבע בקריאת שמחה. 43 "מדוע זכיתי בכבוד הגדול שאם אדוני באה לבקר אותי? 44 התינוק בבטני התנועע בשמחה לשמע קול ברכתך! 45 אלוהים ברך אותך בצורה נפלאה כזאת משום שהאמנת כי יקיים את דבריו."
46 השיבה מרים:
"ברכי נפשי את ה';
47 אגיל ואשמח באלוהים מושיעי!
48 כי עשה חסד עם שפחתו,
ומעתה יברכוני כל הדורות.
49 גדולות ונפלאות עשה עמי אל שדי, קדוש שמו.
50 מדור לדור הוא מעניק את חסדו ורחמיו לכל היראים אותו.
51 בזרוע נטויה עשה מעשי גבורה,
הפר מזימות גאים ורשעים,
52 והוריד שליטים מכיסאם.
אולם את השפלים והנחותים הוא רומם!
53 את העניים האכיל ואת העשירים הרעיב!
ולא שכח כי הבטיח לאבותינו
- לאברהם ולזרעו –
לרחם על ישראל לעולם ועד!"
56 מרים נשארה אצל אלישבע כשלושה חודשים, ולאחר מכן חזרה לביתה. 57 בינתיים תמו ימי הריונה של אלישבע והיא ילדה בן. 58 השמועה על החסד שעשה איתה ה' התפשטה עד מהרה בין שכניה וקרובי משפחתה, וכולם שמחו בשמחתה.
59 ביום השמיני להולדת התינוק התכנסו השכנים והקרובים לטקס ברית-המילה. האורחים היו בטוחים שהתינוק ייקרא "זכריה" – על שם אביו, 60 אולם אלישבע אמרה: "לא, שם התינוק יוחנן!"
61 "יוחנן?" התפלאו האורחים. "אבל אין במשפחתך אף אחד בשם הזה". 62 הם פנו אל זכריה (שעדיין לא היה מסוגל לדבר), ושאלו אותו בתנועות ידיים וברמזים כיצד ייקרא התינוק.
63 זכריה ביקש בתנועות ידיים שיביאו לו לוח, וכתב עליו: "שם הילד יוחנן". 64 באותו רגע חזר אליו כושר הדיבור והוא החל לברך את אלוהים.
65 כל השכונה נמלאה יראת כבוד, והדבר היה נושא לשיחה בכל הרי יהודה. 66 כל השומעים התרשמו עמוקות ואמרו: "מעניין למה נועד הילד הזה." כי היה ברור להם שאלוהים איתו.
67 לאחר מכן נמלא זכריה אביו רוח הקודש וניבא את הנבואה הבאה:
68 "ברוך ה' אלוהי ישראל, כי פנה אל עמו, הודיע ופדה אותו.
69 ה' שלח לנו מושיע גיבור משושלת בית דוד עבדו –
70 כפי שהבטיח לנו בפי נביאיו הקדושים עוד לפני זמן רב –
71 כדי להצילנו מיד כל אויבינו ושונאינו.
76 "ואתה, ילדי הקטן, תיקרא נביא לאל עליון, כי תלך לפני האדון ותפנה לו את הדרך.
77 אתה תלמד את בני-ישראל כיצד הם יכולים להיוושע על-ידי סליחת חטאיהם.
78 "בזכות אהבתו, רחמיו וטוב-לבו של אלוהים יזרח עלינו אור ממרום,
79 כדי להאיר לשרויים במוות ובחשכה, וכדי להוביל את רגלינו אל דרך השלום."
80 הילד גדל, התחזק והתחשל באופיו. הוא התגורר במדבר עד שהגיע המועד להתחיל את שליחותו אל עם-ישראל.

5 当犹太王希律的时候，亚比雅班里有一个祭司，名叫撒迦利亚。他妻子是亚伦的后人，名叫伊利莎白。 6 他们二人在神面前都是义人，遵行主的一切诫命礼仪，没有可指摘的。 7 只是没有孩子，因为伊利莎白不生育，两个人又年纪老迈了。
预言施洗约翰的生
8 撒迦利亚按班次在神面前供祭司的职分， 9 照祭司的规矩掣签，得进主殿烧香。 10 烧香的时候，众百姓在外面祷告。 11 有主的使者站在香坛的右边向他显现。 12 撒迦利亚看见，就惊慌害怕。 13 天使对他说：“撒迦利亚，不要害怕，因为你的祈祷已经被听见了。你的妻子伊利莎白要给你生一个儿子，你要给他起名叫约翰。 14 你必欢喜快乐，有许多人因他出世也必喜乐。 15 他在主面前将要为大，淡酒浓酒都不喝，从母腹里就被圣灵充满了。 16 他要使许多以色列人回转，归于主他们的神。 17 他必有以利亚的心志能力，行在主的前面，叫为父的心转向儿女，叫悖逆的人转从义人的智慧，又为主预备合用的百姓。” 18 撒迦利亚对天使说：“我凭着什么可知道这事呢？我已经老了，我的妻子也年纪老迈了。” 19 天使回答说：“我是站在神面前的加百列，奉差而来对你说话，将这好信息报给你。 20 到了时候，这话必然应验。只因你不信，你必哑巴，不能说话，直到这事成就的日子。” 21 百姓等候撒迦利亚，诧异他许久在殿里。 22 及至他出来，不能和他们说话，他们就知道他在殿里见了异象，因为他直向他们打手势，竟成了哑巴。 23 他供职的日子已满，就回家去了。

26 到了第六个月，天使加百列奉神的差遣往加利利的一座城去，这城名叫拿撒勒； 27 到一个童女那里，是已经许配大卫家的一个人，名叫约瑟，童女的名字叫马利亚。 28 天使进去，对她说：“蒙大恩的女子，我问你安，主和你同在了！” 29 马利亚因这话就很惊慌，又反复思想这样问安是什么意思。 30 天使对她说：“马利亚，不要怕，你在神面前已经蒙恩了。 31 你要怀孕生子，可以给他起名叫耶稣。 32 他要为大，称为至高者的儿子；主神要把他祖大卫的位给他， 33 他要做雅各家的王，直到永远；他的国也没有穷尽。” 34 马利亚对天使说：“我没有出嫁，怎么有这事呢？” 35 天使回答说：“圣灵要临到你身上，至高者的能力要荫庇你。因此，所要生的圣者必称为神的儿子[a]。 36 况且你的亲戚伊利莎白，在年老的时候也怀了男胎，就是那素来称为不生育的，现在有孕六个月了。 37 因为出于神的话，没有一句不带能力的。” 38 马利亚说：“我是主的使女，情愿照你的话成就在我身上！”天使就离开她去了。

39 那时候，马利亚起身急忙往山地里去，来到犹大的一座城， 40 进了撒迦利亚的家，问伊利莎白安。 41 伊利莎白一听马利亚问安，所怀的胎就在腹里跳动，伊利莎白且被圣灵充满， 42 高声喊着说：“你在妇女中是有福的！你所怀的胎也是有福的！ 43 我主的母到我这里来，这是从哪里得的呢？ 44 因为你问安的声音一入我耳，我腹里的胎就欢喜跳动。 45 这相信的女子是有福的！因为主对她所说的话都要应验。”
马利亚尊主为大
46 马利亚说：“我心尊主为大， 47 我灵以神我的救主为乐， 48 因为他顾念他使女的卑微。从今以后，万代要称我有福， 49 那有权能的为我成就了大事，他的名为圣！ 50 他怜悯敬畏他的人，直到世世代代。 51 他用膀臂施展大能，那狂傲的人正心里妄想就被他赶散了。 52 他叫有权柄的失位，叫卑贱的升高； 53 叫饥饿的得饱美食，叫富足的空手回去。 54 他扶助了他的仆人以色列， 55 为要记念亚伯拉罕和他的后裔，施怜悯直到永远，正如从前对我们列祖所说的话。”
56 马利亚和伊利莎白同住约有三个月，就回家去了。
给施洗约翰起名
57 伊利莎白的产期到了，就生了一个儿子。 58 邻里亲族听见主向她大施怜悯，就和她一同欢乐。 59 到了第八日，他们来要给孩子行割礼，并要照他父亲的名字叫他撒迦利亚。 60 他母亲说：“不可，要叫他约翰。” 61 他们说：“你亲族中没有叫这名字的。” 62 他们就向他父亲打手势，问他要叫这孩子什么名字。 63 他要了一块写字的板，就写上说：“他的名字是约翰。”他们便都稀奇。 64 撒迦利亚的口立时开了，舌头也舒展了，就说出话来，称颂神。 65 周围居住的人都惧怕。这一切的事就传遍了犹太的山地。 66 凡听见的人都将这事放在心里，说：“这个孩子将来怎么样呢？”因为有主与他同在。
预言救恩临到以色列人
67 他父亲撒迦利亚被圣灵充满了，就预言说： 68 “主以色列的神是应当称颂的！因他眷顾他的百姓，为他们施行救赎， 69 在他仆人大卫家中，为我们兴起了拯救的角， 70 正如主借着从创世以来圣先知的口所说的话， 71 拯救我们脱离仇敌和一切恨我们之人的手； 72 向我们列祖施怜悯、记念他的圣约， 73 就是他对我们祖宗亚伯拉罕所起的誓， 74 叫我们既从仇敌手中被救出来， 75 就可以终身在他面前，坦然无惧地用圣洁、公义侍奉他。 76 孩子啊，你要称为至高者的先知，因为你要行在主的前面，预备他的道路， 77 叫他的百姓因罪得赦就知道救恩。 78 因我们神怜悯的心肠，叫清晨的日光从高天临到我们， 79 要照亮坐在黑暗中死荫里的人，把我们的脚引到平安的路上。”
80 那孩子渐渐长大，心灵强健，住在旷野，直到他显明在以色列人面前的日子。

1 Por cuanto muchos han tratado de poner en orden y escribir una historia de las cosas que entre nosotros son muy ciertas[a](A), 2 tal como nos las dieron a conocer los que desde el principio(B) fueron[b] testigos oculares(C) y ministros(D) de la palabra[c](E), 3 también a mí me ha parecido conveniente, después de haberlo investigado todo con diligencia desde el principio(F), escribírtelas ordenadamente(G), excelentísimo(H) Teófilo(I), 4 para que sepas la verdad precisa acerca de las cosas que te han sido enseñadas(J).
Anuncio del nacimiento de Juan el Bautista
5 Hubo en los días de Herodes(K), rey de Judea, cierto sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías(L), que tenía por mujer una de las hijas de Aarón[d] que se llamaba Elisabet. 6 Ambos eran justos delante de Dios(M), y se conducían intachablemente(N) en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor. 7 No tenían hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran de edad avanzada[e].
8 Pero aconteció que mientras Zacarías[f] ejercía su ministerio sacerdotal delante de Dios según el orden indicado a su grupo(O), 9 conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, fue escogido por sorteo para entrar al templo del Señor y quemar incienso(P). 10 Toda la multitud del pueblo estaba afuera orando(Q) a la hora de la ofrenda de incienso. 11 Y se le apareció a Zacarías un ángel del Señor(R), de pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso. 12 Al verlo, Zacarías se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de[g] él(S).
13 Pero el ángel le dijo: «No temas(T), Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido oída, y tu mujer Elisabet te dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarás[h] Juan(U). 14 Tendrás gozo y alegría y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento, 15 porque él será grande delante del Señor. No beberá vino ni licor(V), y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre, 16 y hará volver a muchos de los israelitas al Señor su Dios(W). 17 Él irá delante del Señor(X) en el espíritu y poder de Elías(Y) para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos(Z), y a los desobedientes a la actitud de los justos, a fin de preparar(AA) para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto».
18 Entonces Zacarías dijo al ángel: «¿Cómo podré saber esto? Porque yo soy anciano y mi mujer es de edad avanzada[i](AB)». 19 El ángel le respondió: «Yo soy Gabriel(AC), que estoy en[j] la presencia de Dios(AD), y he sido enviado para hablarte y anunciarte estas buenas nuevas. 20 Así que te quedarás mudo, y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que todo esto acontezca, por cuanto no creíste mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su debido tiempo».
21 El pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías y se extrañaba de su tardanza en el templo. 22 Pero cuando salió, no podía hablarles, y se dieron cuenta de que había visto una visión en el templo. Él les hablaba por señas(AE) y permanecía mudo. 23 [k]Cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio sacerdotal, regresó a su casa.
24 Después de estos días, Elisabet su mujer concibió, y se recluyó[l] por cinco meses, diciendo: 25 «Así ha obrado el Señor conmigo en los días en que se dignó mirarme para quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres(AF)».
Anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús
26 Al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel(AG) fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret(AH), 27 a una virgen comprometida para casarse con un hombre que se llamaba José(AI), de los descendientes[m] de David(AJ); y el nombre de la virgen era María. 28 Y entrando el ángel, le dijo: «¡Salve, muy favorecida[n]! El Señor está contigo; bendita eres tú entre las mujeres[o]».
29 Ella se turbó(AK) mucho por estas[p] palabras, y se preguntaba qué clase de saludo sería este. 30 Y el ángel le dijo: «No temas(AL), María, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios. 31 Concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un Hijo, y le pondrás por[q] nombre Jesús(AM). 32 Este será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo(AN), y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de Su padre David(AO); 33 y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob(AP) para siempre, y Su reino no tendrá fin(AQ)».
34 Entonces María dijo al ángel: «¿Cómo será esto, puesto que soy virgen[r]?». 35 El ángel le respondió: «El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti(AR), y el poder del Altísimo(AS) te cubrirá con su sombra; por eso el santo Niño(AT) que nacerá[s] será llamado Hijo de Dios(AU). 36 Tu parienta Elisabet en su vejez también ha concebido un hijo; y este es el sexto mes para ella, la que llamaban estéril. 37 Porque ninguna cosa será imposible para[t] Dios(AV)». 38 Entonces María dijo: «Aquí tienes a la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra». Y el ángel se fue de su presencia.
María visita a Elisabet
39 En esos[u] días María se levantó y fue apresuradamente a la región montañosa(AW), a una ciudad de Judá; 40 y entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet. 41 Cuando Elisabet oyó el saludo de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo(AX), 42 y exclamó a gran voz: «¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! 43 ¿Por qué me ha acontecido esto a mí[v], que la madre de mi Señor(AY) venga a mí? 44 Porque apenas la voz de tu saludo llegó a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de gozo en mi vientre. 45 Y bienaventurada(AZ) la que creyó que tendrá[w] cumplimiento lo que le fue dicho de parte del Señor».
46 Entonces María dijo:
«(BA)Mi alma engrandece al Señor(BB),
47 Y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios(BC) mi Salvador(BD).
48 -»Porque ha mirado la humilde condición de esta su sierva;
Pues desde ahora en adelante todas las generaciones me tendrán por bienaventurada(BE).
49 -»Porque grandes cosas me ha hecho el Poderoso;
Y santo es Su nombre.
50 -»Y de generación en generación[x] es Su misericordia
Para los que le temen(BF).
51 -»Ha hecho proezas[y] con Su brazo(BG);
Ha esparcido a los soberbios en el pensamiento de sus corazones.
52 -»Ha quitado a los poderosos de sus tronos;
Y ha exaltado a los humildes(BH);
53 A los hambrientos ha colmado de bienes(BI)
Y ha despedido a los ricos con las manos vacías.
54 -»Ha ayudado a Israel, Su siervo,
Para recuerdo de Su[z] misericordia
55 Tal como dijo a nuestros padres,
A Abraham y a su descendencia[aa] para siempre(BJ)».
56 María se quedó con Elisabet[ab] como tres meses y después regresó a su casa.
Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista
57 Cuando a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, dio a luz un hijo. 58 Y sus vecinos y parientes oyeron que el Señor había demostrado[ac] Su gran misericordia(BK) hacia ella, y se regocijaban con ella. 59 Al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño(BL), y lo iban a llamar Zacarías según el nombre de su padre. 60 «No, sino que se llamará Juan(BM)», respondió la madre. 61 Y le dijeron: «No hay nadie en tu familia[ad] que tenga ese nombre». 62 Entonces preguntaban por[ae] señas(BN) al padre, cómo lo quería llamar. 63 Él pidió una tablilla y escribió lo siguiente[af]: «Su nombre es Juan(BO)». Y todos se maravillaron.
64 Al instante le fue abierta su boca y suelta su lengua, y comenzó a hablar(BP) dando alabanza a Dios. 65 Y vino temor sobre todos los que vivían a su alrededor; y todas estas cosas se comentaban en toda la región montañosa(BQ) de Judea. 66 Todos los que las oían las guardaban en su corazón, diciendo: «¿Qué, pues, llegará a ser este niño?». Porque la mano del Señor ciertamente estaba con él(BR).
Profecía de Zacarías
67 Su padre Zacarías fue lleno del Espíritu Santo(BS), y profetizó(BT) diciendo:
68 «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel,
Porque nos ha visitado y ha traído redención(BU) para Su pueblo,
69 Y nos ha levantado un cuerno de salvación(BV)
En la casa de David Su siervo(BW),
70 Tal como lo anunció[ag] por boca de Sus santos profetas(BX) desde los tiempos antiguos(BY),
71 Salvación[ah](BZ) de nuestros enemigos
Y de la mano de todos los que nos aborrecen(CA);
72 Para mostrar misericordia(CB) a nuestros padres,
Y para recordar Su santo pacto(CC),
73 El juramento que hizo[ai] a nuestro padre Abraham(CD):
74 Concedernos que, librados de la mano de nuestros enemigos,
Le sirvamos sin temor,
75 En santidad y justicia(CE) delante de Él, todos nuestros días.
76 -»Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta(CF) del Altísimo(CG);
Porque irás delante del Señor(CH) para preparar Sus caminos(CI);
77 Para dar a Su pueblo el conocimiento de la salvación
Por[aj] el perdón de sus pecados(CJ),
78 Por la entrañable misericordia de nuestro Dios,
Con que la Aurora(CK) nos visitará desde lo alto,
79 Para dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte(CL),
Para guiar nuestros pies en el camino de paz».
80 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía(CM) en espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que apareció en público a Israel.
