⁹ he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to offer incense.^(A)

¹¹ My sons, do not now be negligent, for the Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence to minister to him and to be his ministers and offer incense.”^(A)

¹³ The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to consecrate the most holy things, so that he and his sons forever should make offerings before the Lord and minister to him and pronounce blessings in his name forever,^(A)

⁷ Aaron shall offer fragrant incense on it; every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall offer it,^{(A) 8} and when Aaron sets up the lamps in the evening, he shall offer it, a regular incense offering before the Lord throughout your generations.

²⁸ I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to offer incense, to wear an ephod before me, and I gave to the family of your ancestor all my offerings by fire^[a] from the Israelites.^(A)

⁴⁰ a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, shall approach to offer incense before the Lord, so as not to become like Korah and his congregation, just as the Lord had said to him through Moses.^(A)

⁶ These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the first tent^[a] to carry out their ritual duties,

Pride and Apostasy

¹⁶ But when he had become strong he grew proud, to his destruction. For he acted unfaithfully toward the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to make offering on the altar of incense.^(A)

⁴⁹ But Aaron and his sons made offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense, doing all the work of the most holy place, to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.^(A)

Making the Altar of Incense

²⁵ He made the altar of incense of acacia wood, one cubit long and one cubit wide; it was square and was two cubits high; its horns were of one piece with it.^{(A) 26} He overlaid it with pure gold, its top and its sides all around and its horns, and he made a molding of gold around it ²⁷ and two golden rings for it under its molding, on two opposite sides of it, to hold the poles with which to carry it. ²⁸ And he made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.

Making the Anointing Oil and the Incense

²⁹ He made the holy anointing oil also and the pure fragrant incense, blended as by the perfumer.^(B)
